04/25/2008 1:17 PM Alert

Due to problems on my laptop, I had to delete Birders Diary. I did the network download, no problems. When I started Diary for the first time, the bird sang, a message said ' Please wait, updating database'. Then I received the following error and the program ended:

'cmdibackground.get observer name-rs. record count <> 1'

Hi Tim,

Sorry to hear about the computer problems. Here is the fix for this Diary problem:

  1. Start the registry editor
    1. Click on Windows Start button and choose Run
    2. in the Run window, type "regedit" and click OK
      The registry editor will start
  2. In the registry editor, on the left hand side, browse to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Birders Diary\Settings
  3. On the right hand side, find BackgroundReportObserverID and delete it.
  4. Start Diary

That should do it. Let me know please.

p.s. Thanks much for the details on the error message. That makes giving you the right answer easy.

Jeff

Thank you for the quick response and fix. Editing the registry worked fine. I was able to start Diary, did a restore of my backup to the database. Exited Diary. Started Diary, View/Edit, setup my view criteria, click continue, received the following:

Run Time Error 3078

'The microsoft jet database engine cannot find the input table or query 'SightingsView'. Make sure it exists and that its name is spelled correctly'

I did a search for 'SightingsView' and it was not found. Should I download Diary again?

Hi Tim,

What version of Diary are you running?

What version of Windows are you running? (e.g. XP, Vista, etc)

When you say you did a search for "sightingsView", how did you do this? This is an internal database table.

Let's start here.

Jeff

I am running Win-2000, Service Pack-4.
Birders Diary Version-3.6.49, Database-3.6.49

I ran the search by:
Start--->Search--->For files or folders--->entered SightingsView

I just looked in the Birders Diary folder and there is a file named 'BDV3ViewSightings.GRD'.

Just some information.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the info.

SightingsView is an internal database object. Where did this Diary backup come from that you restored? Sounds like it is corrupt.

Did you have a disk drive go bad? Virus infection? Something like that?

Do you have another backup you can try?

I hate to give this kind of response - but let me know on the questions above. If push comes to shove, we can try to recover your sightings data from the database.

Jeff

That backup was created just prior to deleting Diary from my laptop. I am having disk problems, that is the reason for deleting Diary. I do have another backup, but it will be Monday PM when I can try a restore with that version. I can wait until then.

Thanks,

Tim
