04/28/2008 7:25 PM Alert

Jeff,

I tried to add a species to a specific location (a country) and when I did, I creatred a real problem.  The system will not recognize the country name as a filter.  When I try to access the country's checklist to enter sightings, l get the error message stating that "for this taxonomic list, there are not things associted with the location and taxonomic list you selected.

I have two questions:

1) How do I get back to my starting point which allowed the country as a filter?

2) How do I add species sighted in the country that are not on the filtered list?

Bob

Hi Bob,

Others have been bitten by this feature  at times. You ran into this problem because you didn't click the Load button after entering the location. You proceeded to add one species and clicked Update. This overwrites the existing list and replaces it with the one single species you added. Bad software!  I shouldn't be allowing you to do that without at least warning you. My bad.

To correctly add one or more species to a location, be sure to

  1. select the tax list,
  2. Click SET button
  3. select the location
  4. Click the Load button
  5. Then proceed to add/edit/remove entries just as you did.
  6. When done, click Update.

To get back your country list, just tell me which country and I will attach a checklist for that country for you. You could always just reimport the Clements Checklist import file - but as you know, that takes about 2-3 hours. So, I am offering to upload just the country that you are missing so you can refresh it in seconds.

Let me know please,

Jeff

Jeff,
I have corrected the Costa Rica Tax List and used your instructions to add a species, but the second species I could not add. I am trying to add Whimbrel to the list. When I attempt to add it, I am told the species has been split. Choosing either selection, I then choose the tax list (Clement's 2008) and then need to select a location. Costa Rica is not on the location list. How do I get Whimbrel added to Costa Rica?

Hi Bob,

I do not understand the problem.

You corrected the Costa Rica checklist per my import and you added another thing to that location. Sounds good.

But then you say, "but the second species I could not add". I don't know what you mean here. You could not add it using the Checklist Editor? Walk me through exactly what you are trying to do, what you do, and what happens. Be very specific please. There is a simple answer here.

You also say, "when I attempt to add it, I am told the species has been split". Nothing in Diary says "a species has been split". So I suspect you are getting the "Ambiguous Name" dialog. But, again, let me know. Walk me through what you are doing please.

In Diary, and the included tax lists, Whimbrel can refer to a couple of things:

  • Hudsonian Curlew (N. phaeopus hudsonicus)
  • Eurasian Whimbrel (N. phaeopus)

When presented with the Ambiguous Name dialog, select which thing you are wanting to add to Costa Rica.

Let me know please,

Jeff

Jeff,

Okay, from Home Page, I open Chjecklists.
Fill in field: Taxonomy: Clements - World - 2008
Fill in field: Location: Costa Rica
Click radio button: Load
file in field: Name: Whimbrel
Click radio button: +
Window appears with 3 fields from which to select options
1) Thing: Hudsonian Curlew selected
2) Tax List Referenced: Cements - World -2008 selected
3) Location: Costa Rica does not appear to allow selection of it (???)

From your previous note, it seems like I took the proper steps to add Whimbrel to the Costa Rica list until I got to the 3rd selection window after pressing the + button and then I was stumped as to what needed to be done.

Hi Bob,

Ok - thanks so much for the detailed description. Now I know how to help you solve the problem.

In the Ambiguous Name window, simply

1. select Hundsonian Curlew
2. Click OK

Done

3. Back on Checklist Editor, Click Update. Whimbrel will be added.

Note: be sure to click the SET button after specifying the tax list. You probably did that, but left it out of your description.

The Ambiguous Name dialog has instructions at the top to specify the use. See below.

The top grid is the only grid you can select an item from. The bottom two are for reference only.

Jeff

Jeff,

I did as you instructed. The system responded that the list had been updated, but when I tried to enter the sighting, the sightings checklist did not have Whimbrel or Hudsonian Curlew on it. When I use the scientific name, the system finishes the entry for me but the checklist defaults to Long-billed Curlew, which, of course is a different species.

Hi Bob,

This bird is complicated.

I will assume you chose Hudsonian Curlew from the Ambiguous Name window.

How, exactly, are you entering your sightings?
Are you using Checklist or Keyboard entry method?
Which Tax List are you specifying?

Hudsonian Curlew is a subspecies on the Clements 2008 tax list. So, if you are using Checklist Entry method, and did not specify to show subspecies, then...

Also, The common name for this thing in Clements 2008 (for example) is "Whimbrel hudsonicus".

Let me know,

Jeff

Jeff,

I chose Hudsonian Curlew from the Ambiguous Name Window.

I was using the Checklist entry method and using Clements - World - 2008.

I have now added the Whimbrel to Costa Rica by checking the subspecies list but when I do a report it does not show up on the list in any fashion until I checked the subspecies box for teh report format.

It seems to me that "Whimbrel" should be on the Costa Rica list whether there is a subspecies or not. There are many species within any country that are subspecies and their names show up on the checklists.

How will I know in the future whether a species is only listed as a subspecies? It is trial and error? Sort of like we went through with the Whimbrel? Or do I always check the subspecies boxes on the checklist and report formats? This all seems rather confusing to me.

Thanks for your help and particularly for your prompt responses.

Hi Bob,

Whimbrel is one of the very few that poses this dilemma. In this case, you should also add thing "Eurasian Whimbrel" to the Costa Rica list. This is the full species for Whimbrel according to Clements.

This is an error in our data and I will fix it on my end. Not bad for ~1 million data points however.

Jeff
