Well I just managed to delete my Mammals Tax list that I had been building since Version 3.0 that was carried over to an upgrade to 3.6. This is very troubling. Is there any way of retrieving that tax list from a backup file? Or how can remake a Mammals Tax list.

I have been struggling to figure out how to add taxa to a tax list using the version 3.6. The reason why  I did delete my entire list I was trying to delete just one species from the list. For the life of me, I can not figure out how to add something new, it seems that the program will not let me add anything that is not already in the database. For example, I tried creating and adding red-backed vole, but I couldn't type in red-backed vole, instead, the automatic fill function would only  provide me with red backed bishop. This is very frustrating. How does one go about creating a tax list in version 3.6?

Hi,

Yes - you can recover the tax list by restoring a backup.

To add a new thing to any tax list, a thing must first exist for this or you create a new one using the Thing Editor. Then, you add that thing to the tax list using the Tax Editor, classify it, sort it and specify the preferred common name. That is it in a nutshell.

Now, the problem you are running into is in using the SmartSearch fields. Whenever your cursor is blinking inside a SmartSearch field (lite green background) press Alt+F1 to get a popup window explaining all the details on these fields.

To get more specific, I need to know exactly which field on which window you are having trouble entering red-backed vole. Some of the SmartSearch fields allow new entries and some do not. Be sure you create the thing "red-backed vole", using the Thing Editor, before you try to add it to the tax list using the Tax Editor. The name field there allows you to enter new names.

Let's see if this gets you going. Let me know how I can assist further.

Jeff

Thanks,
I was able to rebuild the taxonomy list after copying an existing one then , it went a lot easier when following the order like you instructed. The SmartSearch is a bit tricky, I'm not sure if it was the nature of the field but it seems like you have to complete typing in a name even if the Smartsearch has already filled it in with a similiar name. I think my problem too was that I was trying to skip creating a Thing first. Anyway, I think I got a handle on it now.

Jeff,
Maybe I spoke too soon. I can rebuild my Mammals Tax list now, quite easily, but I can't seem to add sightings of mammals even if I check the taxomomy filter to include Mammals. I don't know what I am not doing correctly. I have successfully added red-backed vole, and other mammals, but can't seem to add them as sightings, they won't come up in the Smartsearch field. If I use the checklist entry method I get a fatal error that says "bad string for sort: Latest error properties: 0 =" .

Jeff,
One more thing. I opened the Taxonomy viewer and clicked on and highligted of the mammal species and then clicked on the edit button, and got an error that said:

"Invalid Smartsearch Value
This value not allowed.
It does not match any known values!
This smartsearch field does not allow new values"

Hi,

The reason you cannot enter sightings for any of your mammals is because you are selecting a Location Filter, but you have not assigned locations to any of your mammals. Either assign locations to your mammals using the Checklist Editor or do not specify a Location Filter for sightings entry.

The last error you report using the Tax Viewer is a known error, but the program continues.

I would like to know more about the previous error; if you can reproduce it, let me know how please.

Thanks,

Jeff

 Jeff,

About the fatal error, I get a fatal error everytime I attempt to enter anything using the checklist editor rather than the keyboard. I attached a word doc that show the screen with the error message.

Maybe related but, maybe a different problem,  I seem to be unable to create a location checklist for most locations that I've created. In the Location Checklist dialogue box, after I enter a location and click "Load" there is nothing. Some locations do work, but most do not.

Jeff,

Uh, never mind about the populating the checklist problem. One thing though I'd suggest for future verisions is trying to make the all the popup windows automatically sized within the main window.  The fatal error trying to enter by checklist though is definitely a persistent issue

Jeff,
Nevermind about the fatal error either, although you may want to fix it in future versions. Noticed in the screen shot I sent you the drop down box for Sort (by) is blank. I imagine this only happens when someone first uses this feature. Once something is picked then the dialogue box always opens up with the last thing chosen to sort by. There is no fatal error occuring once the sort box has something in it.
Eventually, I won't be bothering you anymore.

Ahhh. Interesting. Thanks. I will fix that. I now assume all is working for you?
