My computer has given me so many problems since Dec that I developed a HAL complex. I have to plead with it to start and stay on. If I displease it , it shuts down. It was enough to get a new one with all new hardware and software including Windows Vista. I backed up my data (database_bck) before I junked the old computer so I have the data on a CD. I have ABA-2007, AOU-2007, and Clements-2005 tax lists. I see no problem installing and downloading my back up data for ABA and AOU because it is all current. However, I plan to purchase Clements 2008. My question is should I download Clements 2005, restore my sightings from my backup, then install Clements 2008 or can I skip loading Clements 2005 (don't want to spend hours loading if it is not necessary)?
Advise please, Al Borodayko |

Just practicing for Jeff's absence...
Al,
I don't think that importing the Clements tax list takes that long. When I was preparing the list, I imported, corrected and exported it several times, and I don't think the import took more than a few minutes. It is the Checklist that takes all the time, and you will want to do that eventually.
Your backup file should include all your tax lists, so once you restore, you should have everything. You may need license extensions if your keys have been used up, but that is not a problem if you do it before Jeff leaves or can wait until he returns.
Once you are up and running, install the new Clements tax and check lists, and you should be all set. - just be prepared to wait a while for the checklist to load. |

Thanks Steve!
Al, all you have to do is this:
- Install BD v3.6.49 from the Downloads page, using the special VISTA instructions located on the same page. Be sure to follow these instructions for the installation and activation of your licenses.
- Then, start Diary, and do a Restore of your database backup. This will contain all of your data, tax lists etc. You are now licensed and have all of your old data and tax lists.
- Now, just purchase Clements 08, and follow the instructions on the Downloads :: Tax List Instrucitons page for downloading, importing and activating it.
That is it.

Are you saying I only have to download BD v3.6.49 and my restore of the database backup will re-establish my existing tax lists, checklists and sightings automatically.

So far I have re-installed Birder's Diary v3.6.49 on my computer folllowing religiously your instructions for Vista. I saw something in the forum about deleted the existing database and renaming or replacing with the backup. I don't quite understand if I have to do this so my request is what do I do next?
The file path currently on my computer in Birder's Diary reads C:/Birder's Diary/data/database.mdb
My backup on my CD is labeled database_bck.mdb
What do I do to get the data accross to Birder's Diary without messing up?

Al,
Just delete the existing database.mdb (or rename it, if you prefer) and copy your backup from the CD into that folder named as database.mdb.
BD will grab the replacement file and be ecstatic to be running again. |

I am ecstatic. It worked like you said. My heart rate went up 50% when I hit delete. The only issues outstanding are that when I bring up my sightings in view/edit there is an unused space of about 3/4 inch (could be about 2 more rows of entries if it where available) between the entries box and the small Records Quantity and Selected Quanty boxes. I clicked on my custom layout that I have stored and the rows take up all the available space. When I shut down and restart the empty space is back so my saved layout is ignored. Its minor but if there is something out there to fix it I would like to know what it is.
The other thing is that I cannot backup my data on a CD. I get a message to insert a writable CD even though it is a writable CD that I inserted. I believe that may be something with my computer and not Birder's Diary.
Anyhow, thanks for the help and moral support.

Hi Al,
Can you provide a screen shot of this anomoly with the View/Edit window?
BD does NOT backup to a CD drive. You must first backup to your hard drive, and then use whatever software you normally use to moved files from your hard drive onto your CDrom.

Another anomoly has raised it's head with Vista. In the Birder's Diary Program is a file called WiseUpdt.exe. Windows Defender blocks it every time I start the computer. I added Birder's Diary and Update Birder's Diary to list of exceptions in the Firewall management window (Control Panel/Security) but it still blocks it. I always accept it so that the security dialog box goes away. Is this file necessary? What if I delete it? How do I get Security to accept it?

HI Al,
That is VISTA for you. WiseUpdt.exe is the program that checks to see if there is a new version of Diary to download once per month. It runs on each reboot just to see if it has been a month yet.
How to get VISTA to accept it? Beats me. I have not quite figured out all the Vista security nuances yet.

Here is the screenshot. Interestingly, if I "restore down" the main "View/Edit" window and then "maximize" the gap goes away.

Try this Al. Resize the window - don't maximize. And does the space go away? If so, then close it and reopen it to the new size. Do you still see the space?

Don't know what you mean by resize other than grab the end of the window and drag it down. There were no double arrows on the edge to do that. However, in the windows Dialog Box I clicked on Cascade, The Horizontal, The Vertical too see if that was what you meant. As it turns out, the space is gone but don't ask me which of the button pushes did the trick.

Yeah - that's what I meant. Um sure. Yep. That must've been it. GACK!
Well - weird stuff. But now it shows all rows all the time - right?
