Hi, I'm new here.  I retired about 1.5 years ago and am only now getting to a copy of Birder's Diary that i've had for some time. It's version 2.5 (now don't laugh).  I haven't used it so have no database in place at this time.

My question:

Can i purchase a copy of the latest Birder's Diary Life List Program - World Edition at some reduced rate?

Also, I have Birds of North America (v2.5).  Has that been replaced and now integrated into the Life List Program?

Appreciate any support that i can get.  Just returned from Pelee (been an annual trek since the early '80s) and want to start to build some comparative annual data.

Glenda,

Jeff (the owner/developer of Birder's Diary) is on a birding trip to South America and will be out of pocket for about 10 days, so he'd have to answer your questions. As a general rule, though, I *think* (and I stress *think*) that discounts apply mostly for upgrading from a recent version. The older a version you have, the less of a discount, if any, you get.

As for your Birds of North America question: BD and BNA were, at one time, owned by one company (Thayer) and there was some integration between the two. Several years ago, Jeff bought the rights to BD, which he'd developed for Thayer, and the two software programs are no longer connected.

Even if you have to pay full price for Birders Diary, however, I strongly recommend it. The more recent versions of the program are far more flexible in dealing with multiple taxonomic authorities and the taxonomic lists for the older versions are VERY out of date. Moreover, Jeff works diligently at fixing bugs in new releases, so you definitely ought to get the upgrade. It can't hurt to ask about the discount on his return.

Hi Glenda

Birds of North America is now on version 3.9.4

Pete Thayers website is http://www.thayerbirding.com/dnn/

Unfortunately there is no longer a link between BD and BNA but the newest versions of both are certainly worth the upgrade costs!

HI Glenda,

There is an upgrade price for coming from 2.5 to 3.6, however, that price includes the cost of converting your 2.5 data to 3.6 manually on my part. So, it is more expensive that just purchasing the 3.6 program outright. Which is what I recommend.

Be sure to read the page on this site: Product Info :: Licensing Explained .

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jeff
