06/26/2008 8:07 AM Alert

I am about to move from a desktop running Windows XP to a laptop wit Vista.  All the info that I read about transfering Birder's Diary relates to Ver 3.6.  I can't find my installation or upgrade disk for 3.6.  I have one for 3.5.  Can I install my version 3.5 and then upgrade online to 3.6?  I I can do this, what directories do I install Birder's Diary to?  Should I copy my data to a CD-R or a flash drive using the g drive.  Will I also have to set up a different user account?  I am currently the only user and administrator for this new computer.  Thanks for any advice or help

Hi,

No need to install 3.5. Simply install 3.6 from the downloads page on this web site. Click on the Network Installation link for 3.6.49.

Read the instructions for correctly installing on VISTA at the top of this page (also present on the Downloads page).

After installation, start 3.6 and activate your licenses using the Unlock Now button on the License Information window that comes up.

Then, exit BD, and replace the [installation-directory]/data/database.mdb that gets installed with the installation (it is just a demo database) with a copy of the same file from your other system. This file contains all of your tax lists and data, etc. To get a copy from one system to another, most folks copy it to CD/DVD on the old system and then load that CD/DVD onto the new system and use Windows Explorer to copy it from the CD/DVD into the /data/ directory.

No need to create a new user account for Diary on VISTA, just use your current account.

Let me know if I can assist further,

Jeff

JEFF,

Ihave downloaded the new version of BWD (ver 3.6). When i tried to unlock it with the used id and password that I had received from previous purchases, I got the following message box "The information entered was not validated by the server. Please try again or contact technical services" Please help me unlock or give me a new password, etc.

Thanks very much

Hi David,

To Unlock the user license and/or taxonomic lists, you need the License ID & password from your Invoice; not a userid.

If you just upgraded the same system from an earlier version of 3.6.x to 3.6.49, then there is no need to unlock anything.

Please tell me what you were upgrading from - you bought your 3.6 license in 9/2006. If this was a new system with no prior installation or what?

Thanks,

Jeff

And David,

Don't forget (just in case) that for the BD server to validate your license, you must be online connected to the internet at the time. I think that message, or something similar, can pop up when the installing-upon PC isn't able to connect to the server for validation.
