Jeff,

Since import files are now not visible at all before having to enter a password, does this mean we might soon be able to import our own custom taxonomy CSV files?  I think before the worry was that you could download a tax list, copy it, then import it yourself as your own file.  Right?  But the new process would seem to circumvent this issue, allowing users to import taxonomies they created themselves in Excel.  I hope this is correct!

Hi Nick,

I cannot find a way to allow this that doesn't open the door to potential widespread misuse.

You can create your own tax list using the Tax Editor and use it, but you cannot import one and use it.

fyi

Jeff,

Okay, I kind of thought that would be the case.  I was just hoping since the password setup changed.

Jeff,

I just made a bunch of changes to the ABA subspecies taxonomy in Excel before I remembered that I couldn't re-import it!  Most of the changes just dealt w/ subspecies ordering issues to match the new Clements.  I also updated a lot of range information for subspecies.  Anyway, now I'm stuck with all these changes but can't put them back in BD.  Can I send the .csv to you and have you send me back a .csv that I can actually upload?

Additionally, the only reason I made all these changes outside BD is b/c it takes forever to re-order things in a taxonomy by drag & drop.  It can easily take up to 20 seconds on my machine (which is pretty fast) to reset the sort order after every drag/drop.  Admittedly, this is only within Clements itself, which is huge, but it's still enough in the ABA subspecies list to make it tedious.  Surprisingly, if you change the sort order using the taxonomy editor, it doesn't take very long at all to reset the taxonomy.  Why the huge difference?  Just curious...

Thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick,

What format is your Excel CSV in? Will I have to reformat it to BD specifications? Or is it already in that format?

Yes - use the Tax Editor to reset Sort orders. Much quicker. Why? Because that code is much newer and more streamlined. Is there some reason you don't use that?

Jeff,

Yes, the .csv is in BD format already.  I was just editing a BD export.

I use the tax viewer to resort things because it's much easier for me to visualize.  I guess I just find it more user-friendly.   Also, I sometimes need to move things in groups (e.g. several species to a new genus), and I like being able to select all of them and then drag/drop.

Thanks for the info on the use of Tax Viewer vs Editor.

Did you export this CSV file from BD, then edit it? If so, I think you should be able to re-import it with edits. But my memory is fuzzy on that right now. If not, I will be happy to take it from you and fix it. But let me know if you can't re-import it.

Thanks,

Jeff
