Hello Birder's Diary People,

I might be missing something....  However, is their a way to make checklists by month?  For example, I wanted to make a checklist tonight of all the birds I have observed in Missouri for the month of January.  But, I can not figure out for the life of me if this is possible.  I tried searching the forum for a similar topic, but did not find any similar questions - So, possibly I just need to be pointed in the right direction.

Josh

Hi Josh,

Yes. You can use the Sightings TAB in the Report writer window.

Set the Ignore Year checkbox as shown below and then set the dates for 1/1 and 1/31. This will report on all sightings across all years.

An example report for doing this is also attached (JanuarySightings.csv) and can be downloaded to your system and imported.

  1. Click File | Import/Export...
  2. Select the Sightings TAB
  3. Click on the Import button and select the CSV file after downloading to your system.
  4. Now go to your report window and open up the Sightings templates and you will see a report named "january sightings".

Let me know if I can assist further,

Jeff

p.s.This feature will be much improved in v3.7.

Thanks Jeff.... Glad to hear it will be improved in v 3.7.

Speaking of v 3.7 - Not to put you on the spot, but is their an estimate of when we might see that?

Estimate: Soon

Disclaimer: My estimates are historically poor.

Hello Jeff (and the rest of the Birder's Diary People).  I have gotten back to the question above I asked in 2007....  Have been busy here - hahaha...

Trying the method as described above I can certainly get a list of all the sightings I have for any given month with or without respect to the year...  However, I would like to make a checklist of birds observed in Missouri for the month of May without respect to the year.  Is this possible?

Thanks - And I am still looking very forward to version 3.7.  The abundance graph feature looks awesome!

Hi Josh,

I would like to make a checklist of birds observed in Missouri for the month of May without respect to the year.

You can certainly produce a list of birds observed in Missouri for the month of May without respect to the year, but you can't produce a Checklist format report with those criteria. As you can see, the Checklist TAB on the reports window does not contain the ignore year feature, nor any start/end date fields.

Let me know if I missed the question.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff  - That certainly answers the question.  If the "idea" of making monthly checklists has not already been added to the wishlist - Please, add it.

Thanks again,

Josh

There may be some confusion.

A checklist is the birds that have occurred at a given location in a given period of time. Generally the period is "Ever".

If you have a a list of all the birds that have occurred in Missouri in the Spring, or in May (or a checklist for any other time period), it can be entered as a Checklist. Just give it a different name. from any existing Checklist

Or did I miss the point? Are you trying to do something else?

Steve

Hi Steve,

It sounds to me as if you are using the term Checklist to refer to a taxonomic list in BD. Are you referring to creating a taxonomic list in BD for the list of birds that have occured in MO in May?

In case of confusion: Hopefully this adds a little clarity, I want to make a checklist, a list I can printo off to carry with me that I can check off species I have observed during May in Missouri. So in this case I want a checklist of the birds I have observed "ever" in May in Missouri.

Jeff - No, I was thinking he meant a Missouri Checklist for the month of May.

With the latest clarification, it sounds like a Sightings report for Missouri, May 1 to May 30, ignore years, and the desired Output Columns with "Group by" turned on might do the trick.

Except I cannot get a checkbox... ;-(

And after I submitted it, I read the rest of the thread, and found I had almost duplicated Jeff's answer from some time ago.  Go figure..

Steve

Ha. Well Josh, In that case, I recommend a Sightings report configured how you like (but it will be missing the checkbox - as you can't currently add that to the Sightings report style). You can certainly take that with you into the field and just put a checkmark next to those birds. This seems to give you everything you are asking for without the checkbox.

Jeff
