| It would be nice to able to generate reports in the field as well as record new sightings. I wouldn't mind having everything on a storage card that i could stick into my Palm Pilot as needed. That way memory shouldn't be a problem. |

Hi Jeff,
I would be interested in a PDA add-on, as well as testing also. I use Palm OS, so at this time I can't be of any assistance. For what it is worth, the key things I would like with it are:
1. Input min/max for species observed
2. Capacity to select from UDF's that could be added to the basic list
3. Capability to track entries by trip or by location (or both)
Thanks,
Homer
PS appreciate all the little tweaks and improvements with the updates |

John & Jeff,
Obviously, the more you can do with the program in the field, the more valuable it becomes. However, not being able to access past sightings isn't a "must have" feature, just something that would be nice.
For instance, if I'm on a work trip out to California and I found myself with unexpected downtime (translation: birding opportunity), it would be nice to be able to review my California life list and see what I'm missing, so that I could, in turn, maximize my birding opportunities. There are lots of "little" things like that which would make it useful to have the full dataset. That said, I certainly understand the data limits of a pocket PC, even maxed out with add-on cards, and realistically, carrying a notebook computer on a trip like that, with BD installed, is probably a better idea. But on that note... ever so slightly off-topic...
It would be nice if (way down the line), BD could be installed on one computer as the "master" copy, and have synching capability with a "slave" copy on a notebook. I know you can do this manually, by copying your database over from one to the other, but that overwrites the entire data file; I'm envisioning something where if you add records to your notebook in the field, upon synching with the desktop copy, those would be added in; and if you delete something on the desktop machine, the record would be "tombstoned" until the laptop was synched and it was removed from the laptop's data as well. Whether that's even possible with the Jet database engine and the development tools you're using, I'm not certain, and I'm sure it would be a lot of work, but it would make a second copy on a notebook much more useful. |

Thanks for the kudos and input Homer. I have added you to the Handheld Beta group. You now have access to the Beta PDA forum.

You know - I just recently got myself in trouble between my real database (as opposed to the many test databases I get confused with) on my desktop and the copy on my laptop. I had recent sightings on both that were not copied to the other. So, by a quick look at both I saw that my recent trip to SE Colorado was on my laptop but not on my desktop (while some other data was on my desktop but not on my laptop). I used the Export Sightings feature to export those SE CO sigthings from my laptop and import them into my desktop. Then I took my desktop database and copied it to my laptop. Now both machines had all data.
I know this is not what you really wanted, I just wanted to point out the usefullness of the Export Sightings features to help get two databases back into sync.
There is so much to consider when syncing two Access DBs. I am not sure where to start. But I have put it on my ToDo list as something to investigate in a future release.

Oh yeah - Kevin - it IS currently spec'd that I will upload lifer info based on the data you select to be downloaded to your PDA. So you should be able to see which things in a checklist on your PDA would be lifers.

Is there another thread on this? You've mentioned a link at the bottom of the forums page but I don't see one. It would be good to able to view previously created reports while in the field. |

Hi Dan,
The PDA Beta forum is only visible by those that signed up to be a beta tester for PocketPCs. If you would like, I can easily add you and then you will be able to join in on the Beta forum for that.
Due to PDA limitations, you probably will NOT be able to "view previously created reports" in the field. Just record sightings and have them auto-uploaded back to your desktop version of BD.

You're right that it's not "ideal", but it's certainly a good workaround for us techie-types who are comfortable with that sort of thing. And I realize it's a major undertaking--if, in fact, the Access engine even allows it.
But it *would* be useful to think about the next time you do a major code overhaul.
