How do I import sightings from AviSys?

i.e. which output format from AviSys do you use for import?

Do you have the sequence of commands to AviSys to export a file that Birder's Diary will accept.

Thanks.

Hello:

In your installation directory [c:\program files\birder's diary\] there is a document that takes you step-by-step through the process. The filename is "Importing your Avisys data.doc".

Let me know if I can assist with this or anything else,
Jeff

When will there be an update for importing Avisys V6 data into Birder's Diary available? I'm having trouble trying to transfer files.

Thanks.

Hello eraptor:

What kind of trouble are you having? Be as specific as possible please.

If you wouldn't mind, please send me an example of the sightings export file as per the instructions in the Avisys import document. Just ZIP it and attach it here.

Thanks,

Jeff

I'm getting an error message stating that the import file cannot be found. Also, I ordered the AOU checklist but it doesn't show up in the License Information box. Was it not included on the CD or is that shipped separately? I went to the download page on the website and tried that but nothing works. Do I need to contact Sales and have them activate it?

Thanks.

Hi Erik,

Concerning AOU checklist, it is not in the default database that gets installed by default. So, all you need to do is to follow the step-by-step instructions found on this site on the Downloads :: Tax List Instructions page.

As for the AviSys import, please tell me more about where you are getting the file not found error. Please tell me where in the instruction guide for this process that you are at, and what you did just before getting the error.

We will get you going. Just need more info to give you the right advice.

Thanks,

Jeff

I'm trying to import Avisys data and Excel data into my trial version of Birder's Diary and can't figure out how to do it. Is there a conversion tool I need to download?

I also would like to export data to eBird to see how it works. I've downoaded the eBird toolkit. Can I use it with my trial version?

Thanks,
Marilyn

Hello Marilyn,

The AviSys conversion tool is installed with Birder's Diary. As per the reply above, there is a step-by-step instructions document that gets installed also.

In your installation directory [c:\program files\birder's diary\] there is a document that takes you step-by-step through the process. The filename is "Importing your Avisys data.doc".

Some folks experience an error with the conversion program. If you do, I will convert your two dat  files for you.

Yes - you can use the eBird Toolokit with your trial version. A user guide for that was installed with that installation also.

Let me know if I can assist further,

Jeff

Jeff,

I saw the reply above but don't have that Word doc in my birder's diary file. My software was loaded here ~ C:\Birder's Diary ~ and not to Program Files. I've searched my entire computer for that file name and couldn't find it, either. Do I need to reload the software? I did find the eBird Toolkit and printed off the User Guide.

I have Avisys 6.0 and have entered data for several trips that I would like to import into Birder's Diary. I'd also like to import some data from various Excel files into BD. I've also entered data directly into BD. Next, I'd like to export all of the data from BD to eBird. I'd like to experiment with this before my BD free trial expires. Right now, I'm at a standstill.

Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,

So sorry. I had completely forgotten that I removed that document from the kit and put it on this web site in the Online Users Guide (under the Support menu button at the top of this page). Please go to that, and then in the Table of Contents on the left select Windows => Import From Avisys Window. This contains your instructions that you are looking for. Please let me know if you get that rare error. If so, reply back here and attach your two .dat files from the import process and I will convert them for you.

You can do all of the other things that you mention above. Importing sightings from Excel does require some computer know-how. See instructions for this in the Online Users Guide (mentioned above), Windows => Import/Export Data Window.

Let me know if I can assist further,

Jeff

Jeff,
I can't use the Contents, Index or Search functions with the Online Users Guide. They don't seem to be available.

Hello Marilyn,

Are you using Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) or Mozilla Firefox as your browser? I know both of those work. I have heard lots of problems with Google Chrome. Please use IE or Firefox and it should work.

Please let me know,

Jeff

Jeff,

I got an error message when I tried to import the Avisys file. It said:

Run-time error '3024':
Could not find file 'C:\Documents and Settings\test\Import.mdb'

I can't figure out how to attach the .dat file to this post so that you can convert it.

Will you have to intercede in the import of all data from Avisys in the future?

Marilyn

Tried attaching the .dat files again.

Hi Marilyn,

Will you have to intercede in the import of all data from Avisys in the future?

You should only export/import your Avisys data once, and then use BD from there on out.

This error occurs on about 5% of users systems and I haven't been able to track down why.

Do you plan on needing more Avisys data converted in the future?

Jeff

Jeff,

I've been trying out both systems for 30 days to see which one suits me best. I've entered trip data into each system and have tried exporting from one system to another and to eBird.

Although I would have like to have the flexibility to experiment with data import/export on my own, I don't have to continue doing that if you have to convert the data for me each time.

Please send me the converted data files I sent you so I can see how the import works.

Thanks - Marilyn
