06/18/2008 12:18 PM Alert

I am new to Birder's Diary. Still evaluating the demo.  So far I like what I see.  I am using Handheld Birds to record my sightings.  Can I import the Handheld Birds checklists into Birder's Diary?

Hi,

You can import sightings into Diary from just about any source. What is required up front is to get the data into Diary Sightings import format. This information can be found on this site under "Support :: Online Users Guide", go to the Windows book on the left and then choose Import/Export Window. It gives you details about the Sightings import format.

So, all Handheld has to be able to do is to export sightings into some textual or CSV/spreadsheet format.

Let me know if I can assist with any of this or if you have any further questions.

Jeff

Thank you. The data from Handheld jusy needs to be cut from the Handheld spreadsheet and pasted into the csv formatted worksheet. Saves lots of work on long lists.

I have imported two lists per your instructions. All the sightings show up in the edit screen, however they do not show up in the reports. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Dick

Hi Dick,

How are you trying to use the report window to view your sightings? If you can show a screen shot of the report window (you can attached it to your post) that would help a lot.

Basically, to see the sightings, I would use the Sightings TAB of the Report window. Select a basic template from the list on the left; choose the proper Tax list in the dropdown; then Preview the report.

Let me know please,

Jeff

Per your request I am sending screenshots illustrating my problem.  The edit screen shows the 6/19/2008 sightings that were imported. The second screenshot shows the print parameters.  The third & fourth the report.

Thanks

Dick

Hi Dick,

Thanks for the screen shots. Really helps!

What I see is that the View/Edit window is showing 46 records and that the report shows 39 records. You have shown me the Report Design window which shows your selection criteria for the report. So, there must a difference between those settings and those you are using in the View Setup Window. Perhaps the date or something like that. You will want to compare your settings between the report design window and that of the View Setup Window to see what is different. If you do not see the difference, please go ahead and post a screen shot of the view setup window.

Thanks

Jeff

Ah! Take a look at your locations. You have two "back yard" locations:

1. "My Back Yard", and
2. "My Backyard"

The first location shows up on your report and view screen. But the second only shows on the View screen.

My guess is that the #2 sightings are what is missing from the report.
I am also guessing that the #2 location is not linked as a child of Michigan. Whereas, #1 location is. This would also indicate that you are using a different location (or none at all) for the View window than that which you are using for the Report window.

You can check and correct this by using the Location window.

Let me know please,
Jeff

That is the solution.  Operator error strikes again.  Your support of your product is fantastic!

Thanks much.

Dick
