Help! My wife has used Version 3 (Prog ver 3.0.2, DB 3.1.5) for several years and everything worked fine. Also have Guide to Birds of North America (Ver 3) and they worked fine together. Then latter wouldn't work any more. Tried to upgrade your SW to 3.5x (and paid for it as I recall) and ran into problems. Restored 3.0, sent email, received no reply. Registered here today and bought full version of 3.6. , AOU 2005 list. Downloaded per instructions to new folder (chug,chug,chug...) and now have four files in the folder: Birder's Diary 3 - 120,766 KB shortcut (?) Birds -AOU-2005-a 447 KB Excel CSV Birds-AOU-2004 446 KB Excel CSV ReadMe 360 KB RTF
Readme file is informative, but gives me not a clue on how to turn a shortcut file into something (.exe? .bat?) that will install the new version. Also, I would hope I can copy my existing DB file into the new program without having to go through the 3.5 update. Have about four years worth of data anf the wife would not be too happy reentering it all...:-}

Hi Victoryman,
Please read the instructions on the page on this site by choosing "Product Info >> Upgrading from V2.x or V3.0". It contains step-by-step instructions for upgrading from 3.0 to 3.6.
Yes - you can upgrade straight from 3.0 to 3.6 and not have to enter your data again.
I am not sure what the "Birder's Diary 3 -" file is that you list above.

In addition, I am offering a new service that some customers are taking me up on.
Iwill offer to get onto your system and upgrade 3.0 to 3.6 for you - for an additional $50, in addition to the upgrade licenses that you must purchase. If you want this, simply post back and let me know.

Jeff - I went back and downloaded the .exe file again and this time it arrived intact. Installed 3.6 but have gone no farther. If I understand your first post, I should be able to move the Access DB file from the 3.0 to 3.6 directory and be back in business. Since I paid the price for a full 3.6 license, what do I lose if I don't convert the old 3.0? Right now my 3.0 version is working fine.

Hi,
So, you installed 3.6 and it installed correctly - right?
Did you go through the steps to activate and license it? Did that all go well?
Yes - all you need to do is 1) exit 3.6 and 3.0, 2) move a copy of the database, 3) start 3.6.
But I am really confused by the questions. If you followed all the steps on the referenced web page on this site, then you should be up and running on v3.6 with your old data. Did you follow all the steps with success? If not, what steps gave you trouble?
Let me know, Jeff |

| Both programs are activated and seem to be working correctly. The old data is in 3.6 and can be accessed with no problem. Only thing I found odd was that the default DB file in 3.6 with no sighting or trip data in it was larger (80+ MB) than the old DB file (29+ MB) with all our data. I renamed the default 3.6 database and should be able to delete it, correct? |

Yes - you can delete the old default 3.6 database.
The 3.0 database is smaller because it does not have all the data in it that the 3.6 default does.
Once you go through the "Post Installation Instructions when coming from 2.x or 3.0" (on the same web page), your database will grow in size.

...and a confusing map! I had 3.6.12 up and running fine, then received email about the 3.6.13 upgrade on 9/18. Followed instructions today OK until I got to the download page - nothing called 3.6.13 to be found. Went back to your home page and found notice about 3.6.22 upgrade, which was listed on network installation. Downloaded 3.6.22 (chug, chug, chug - and I have DSL) and watched it install new database file. Nothing about saving old one or about applying an upgrade. It prompted for a birders diary directory and I said yes - assuming it had found the current copy of 3.6. The short of it - I now have two copies of 3.6. The older folder \Birders Diary 3_6 has all my sighting data and the new \Birders Diary has the new update but the default (and empty) database. Can I simply copy the populated DB file over to the new \Birders Diary directory as I did from 3.0 to 3.6 and delete \Birders Diary 3_6 or is the latter a trial verison that will cause problems down the road? Had I told it to download to \Birders Diary 3_6 instead of the default I think I would have been OK. The default was preserved because it had the original 3.0 in it and I wanted to make sure I didn't lose it until the new one was up and running. Would I be better off just waiting for the next update and then updating \Birders Diary 3_6?

Whew! That's a mouthful.
Yes - you are fine. You have figured everything out. The latest update is always available on the Downloads page, and generally, right after a release, that version number changes often. Just get the latest one. You can always check to make sure you are at the latest version by choosing Help | Internet: Check for an Update within BD. This will automatically start an upgrade for you if you are not at the latest version.
You will not experience any licensing issues with your dual installation.
And yes, you can simply copy your old 3.0 database into your new 3.6.22 installation /data directory, Or you can copy the 3.6.13 database over to that directory. Either one will work. Of course, if you have added new sightings to your 3.6.13 database, then you should copy that one, since it is newer.
Let me know if I can assist further.
