I just bought a new computer running vista and I want to install my software. I am running version 3.6.49 of BD. Do I have to load the original version 3, then 3.5, then 3.6 or can I just load the lastest verision of 3.6. Do i need to load all the tax lists separetely or can I copy them off the old computer.

Hi Mike,
Very simple process.
- Install 3.6.49 from the Downloads page on this site onto your new computer. Do not start 3.6 after installation.
- The installation creates a Demo database in c:\birder's diary\data\database.mdb. Delete this file and replace it with a copy of your 3.6 database from your old system. Your old version of 3.6.49 may have put BD into c:\program files\birder's diary\data\.
- Now Activate your licenses using the instructions at the top of this page for activation on Vista.
That is it.
Let me know if I can help further,
Jeff |

I found the password and everything is loaded. Your instructions on transferring the data files worked like a charm. Even Petey works Thanks again jeff

Hi Jeff Have tried to follow the above to install BD on a new laptop using Vista. Have downloaded 3.6.49 but cannot get to the activate window. It tells me it can't find database.mdb. What I have done is to delete the demo database and load my Birder's Diary Backup which it doesn't seem to recognise. Please advise. Charles |

Hello Charles,
Ok - so, the installation is probably fine; you deleted the Demo database. You put a copy of your backup in the /data directory in its place - I assume. The likely culprit is that you did not rename your backup file to "database.mdb".
Let me know on this please,
Jeff |

I renamed the file but it now says "already opened exclusively by another user or you need permission to view" Support info/tabid/58/default.aspx My computer situation is that I had BD installed on two computers in two different locations. One of the computers was stolen so I have now got a laptop to replace one of the desktops and will carry it to the other location as required. At this moment I am using the same internet connection for both computers. Both are using Vista. Charles |

Hi Charles,
In this case, check the READONLY property on the file "database.mdb" using Windows Explorer. In Windows Explorer (My Computer) navigate to that file and right-click on it and choose Properties. On one of the TABs you will find a READOnly Checbox. Make sure it is unchecked and try again.
Let me know please,

Jeff I've now seen that every time I uncheck the ReadOnly box and try to proceed, the box automatically reinstates the check. How can I prevent this? Charles |

Hmmm - this sounds like a Windows issue. Reboot, change the ReadOnly again and see if that clears it up. Not sure why Windows would keep marking it as REadOnly unless the directory it is in is also readonly.
If the reboot doesn't clear it up, let me know and I will get onto your system and have a look for you.

| No change after rebooting. Could it have something to do with the file structure? At the moment it is under C:Birder's Diary/Data/Database.mdb |

Hi Charles,
Thanks for letting me onto your system.
Instead of putting your database into the /data directory, you had created a subdirectory called "database.mdb" and then under that, you had the actual file "database.mdb".
Tricky Windows stuff - I know. All set now.
Let me know if I can help with anything else.
