I presume your message on bd 3.6.13 has been superseded by 3.6.20 which I have downloaded. Incidentally I wasn't sure whether to "run" or "save" the update. I chose "run" which worked for me.
I am planning to change my computer shortly. Can I back up both software and data to a cd/dvd to transfer to the new computer or do I only back up the data and have to download the programs from you again?

Yes. The downloads page always contains the latest build (the "z" part in the version number x.y.z - e.g. v3.6.20) and is updated frequently with bug fixes and minor enhancements.

You can always check to make sure you are running the latest version by clicking on Help | Internet: Check for an Update! in Diary.

Or as you found, you can just go to the Downloads page and start the installation by clicking on the Network Installation link.

Yes - choosing Run is the correct answer. "Save" just means you have to run it after downloading it and adds an extra step.

Just backup your database and put it on a CDrom or other transferrable media.

When you get your new system, just come back to the Downloads page and install the latest version available for which you are licensed. A 3.6 license entitles you to any v3.6.x product.

All you have to do then is to reapply your Licenses. This may mean applying earlier versions if you have upgrade licenses. For example, if you have an "Upgrade to 3.6 from 3.5" license, you will need to apply your 3.5 license first. But if your 3.5 license is an upgrade from 3.0 or 2.x, then you will need to send me the User Codes (explained on the Upgrading from 2.x or 3.0 page on this site) to get your 3.5 license working.

You do not need to reimport any lists however as they are in your database that you saved and restored.

And when all else fails, I am here to assist.

Thanks for your reply. Re my query on changing computers. I have now bought a second computer which I plan to take to Ireland as well as overhauling the one I have in the UK.

My Irish computer will only be linked to the internet when I take it there. I thought I would see how far I could get before taking it there and having to do all the updates on the net after bd3. So I loaded the old bd3 and firstly it told me I wasn't registered and had 30 days to do so, and secondly the birder's diary backup that I had loaded onto the new computer didn't feed in to bd3.

I'm a bit worried to make sure that my back-ups are working before I clean out the old machine and would appreciate your advice.

Regards

Charles

Hi Charles,

My advice is to simply follow the instructions on the "Product Info > Upgrading from v2.x or v3.0" page on this site.

In short, all you need to do is to install the latest version of 3.6 (you must have purchased the appropriate licenses per the referenced page above) and then copy your v3.0 database into the 3.6 installation directory (/data subdirectory). Then start 3.6. That is all that is required.

If this doesn't seem to answer your questions, please give me a detailed description of your computers and their current state (which versions are installed on which).

Thanks,
Jeff

I think you are saying that I can't do anything with the machine I plan to take to Ireland until I link it to the internet. Please confirm.

Sorry, should also have said there is nothing on the machine for Ireland while the UK machine is currently on 3.6 but will soon be blank as I have to clean out all the software and reload XP

Hi Charles,

You can download the Single Setup File and burn that to a CDrom. Then you have the entire installation on a CDrom. You can install on your laptop from that even if it is not on the internet. But, to activate your license keys, you must be connected to the internet. It will run fully functional until then for 30 days. You can apply your license keys anytime during that or after the 30 day demo. No loss of data.

Once you reload XP on your main system, the process will be exactly the same. Get a backup of your database before that however.

Hi Jeff

Thanks for that. Have now got the Single Setup File on a CD.

When I reload XP on my main system will it be sufficient to just apply the 3.6 license key and none of the earlier keys? Or do I have to go back to the 3.0 license and work forward?

Hi Charles,

Start with your 3.5 license and then apply your 3.6 license. The 3.5 activates use of legacy tax lists and the 2004 tax lists. Then apply any newer tax list licenses you may have.

Let me know if I can assist further.
