Jeff,

What would be the advantage of purchasing the Birds of North & Central America vs Cornell Labs & Clements World list? .

Thanks

Kirk

Hi Kirk,

ABA and SACC tend to be more up to date by one year than Clements/Cornell.

You cannot produce a World Life List report/count without Clements/Cornell.

You cannot produce a valid ABA Area Life List report/count without ABA.

Those are the things that come to my mind. Steve?

OK,
So there is no advantage in creating checklist, reports and so on for central america between the two modules besides what you mentioned. In addition what is required to change my username?
Thanks again,
Kirk

Hi Kirk,

Don't understand the first sentence.

I don't think you can change your username. I assume you are talking about this web site. Simply logout and register again with a new username. No limit.

Kirk,

Let me take a stab at this too.

For Central America, the ABA list won't help (the ABA area doesn't cover North America south of the US-Mexico border). So for Central American sightings, your choices are AOU or Clements.

If you have no sightings to worry about other than ones within the AOU area, then the AOU taxonomy should be sufficient for almost any purpose. The sole exception would be if you need ABA-specific reports for submitting to them, in which case you might also want the ABA taxonomy.

If you do have sightings in the Americas outside the AOU area (e.g, in South America), then your choices are a bit more complicated. You can use both the AOU and the SACC taxonomies, but you will not be able to run a single report covering both areas. However, these two taxonomies are updated annually and usually fairly quickly.

The other alternative is to use a worldwide taxonomy (currently, the only one available for BD is Clements, owned and maintained by Cornell). The Clements taxonomy would cover both North and South America so that you could run reports covering the entire area, giving you a life total across both continents. However, the Clements taxonomy differs somewhat from the AOU and SACC taxonomies with respect to the birds found in those areas (although - correct me if I'm wrong, Steve) Cornell is working to reduce those discrepancies and to align its taxonomy with the AOU/SACC lists as much as possible. One big difference is that the Clements list includes all subspecies for all the birds on the list, so entering data using common names may cause a few headaches - making sure you are recording a sighting for the correct "thing".

If you have bird observations outside the Americas, Clements is a almost a necessity for Birders Diary.
