I got 3.7 installed OK, but was blocked from installing the 2010 Clements by this message  "70 permission denied." Please help. BTW, I had trouble with the installation because the receipt that I printed out stated that the password for each installation  would be the same as my log in password. When I tried to log in, I found out that they are actually different. Confusing and inaccurate message on the receipt!

Hello Spencer,

Concerning the permission error (thanks for the screen shot by the way), exactly when do you get that? After clicking on the Import button on the Taxonomy TAB? Or sometime after that? Please be specific. Thanks.

I am pretty sure this is going to indicate some sort of protection/privilege issue on your system that is going to need to be resolved. But if you give me the info above, I can help you isolate where the problem probably is.

Thanks for the feedback on the installation instructions.

You may now download your purchased item(s) from the "Downloads" page at http://www.BirdersDiary.com. View instructions for product installation at the same location. For taxonomic lists, just click on the purchased tax list and the download will begin. After download is complete, a video will auto-play demonstrating how to import the new tax list into Birder's Diary.
You will need the following password to run the installation: "XXXXXXXX".

Above are the instructions on your invoice. The GREEN highlighted section indicates the installation password.

While the yellow highlighted section indicates the License password.

The password for each LICENSE is the same for all licenses. However, the installation password is different for each product. I know it's a lot of info and can really be confusing at times. That is why I try to offer prompt support on any such issues. And I am always trying to update this type of text to be as easy to follow as possible. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I receive the RTE70 Permission error periodically.

In my experience it means that I have opened the file in a text-editor or some other application like Excel or Word, and - while I still have it open - I try to get BD to import it.

Make sure you don't have it open in anything else - and try it again.

Steve

I get the error message when I click on the Tax file in the Birders Dairy folder. I am still getting it. The password issue is not a confusion between the License psasworrd and the installation password. The liscense pass word is xxxxx, that is supposed to be the same as the login password, however the login password is actually xxxxxxx, which is a password that I started using more recently. The login instructions state that the login password is always the same as the license password on the receipt. It ain't so!

Hello Spencer,

Did you read SteveO's possible explanation of your RTE 70 above? Do you have the import file open by some other program? If so, be sure to close any appliation which may have this import file open. If you still continue to get the error, reboot your system and try again. That should clear up any misc Windows file locks.

There are two different login accounts involved here. One is your Online Store account, which is separate because it contains your purchase information (e.g. Credit Card, etc), and the other is the account you use to logon to this web site to use these forums and access the Downloads page.

For the Online Store, your password is the same as ALL of your license passwords. But this is not necessarily the same, unless you set it up this way, the same as your password for this web site.

I did a complete shutdown, let it sit and then rebooted. I opened Birder's Diary 3.7, and attempted to import the tax. No other program running except the Kaspersky Internet Security. Same result. I get the same error message. Shut down Kaspersky completely. Still same result.

I still believe that that error is caused by attempting to write to a read-only file or attempting to read a locked file.

Since I know BD does not wite to the file on import, I have to assume that file is somehow locked.

Is it possible that you downloaded the file as one user, and are attempting to import it as another user that does not have permission to read the first user's files?

I admit that is kind of a stretch, and I do not know if it would even cause the RTE 70 error, but it is all I can think of at the moment.

Steve

Hi Spencer,

In addition to what Steve mentioned; I want to make sure that I understand exactly where you are getting this error.

My assumption is that you are

  1. In the Import/Export window and on the Taxonomy TAB
  2. You click on the Import button
  3. You browse to and select a file - which file exactly are you selecting?
  4. Then you click the Open button - and this is where you get the error - correct?

Let me know on this. Then it may require me getting onto your system and getting this straightened out for you.

Another idea Spencer - perhaps it is your C:\Birder's Diary\data\database.mdb file that is write-protected. Right-click on that file in Windows Explorer and check to see if the Read Only box is checked.

You are describing the sequence exactly. I get the message when I click open or doupble click the file. The file is Birds-Clements-2010v65. I have checked the database, and the tax file. Nothing is read only.

It is good to see that buying and installing anything in Birders Dairly is still an intellectually challenging and technologically humbling event.

HI Spencer,

Well, it should not be challenging. You are the first out of thousands to report this. So it is something particular to your system.

What is good to know, is that I am willing to get onto your system and see if I cannot figure this out.

Would sometime tomorrow work for you?

I should be able to get home from work and turn the computer over to you sometime around 4:00. Would that work for you? Should I just post on the forum when I get home that I am available?

I got onto Spencer's system today. Indeed, BD reports the permission denied error on attempting to open the taxonomic import file. I could find no events reported in the system event log. He has Kaspersky installed. Spencer indicated that he had tried turning that off and the results were the same. I was able to open the import file in NotePad without error.

So, I right-clicked on BD and chose "run as admin". The import started without error this time.

I do not know what could have been producing the permission error - but something on Spencer's system is preventing BD from doing standard file-open-read operations that work on thousands of other machines. He has a workaround now, but we did not figure out what is preventing BD from opening and/or reading the file.

I did ask Spencer in a separate email (since he has obviously imported older tax lists in the past) what might have changed between when it worked and now when it does not. Perhaps he will come up with an idea.

fyi

Jeff
