Hi, Jeff,
I have two questions regarding the new 2006 ABA and AOU taxonomic updates:
First:
I recently upgraded from BD v3.5 to v3.6, and I’ve subsequently installed the v3.6.22 update, all with no problems. The program was working great, and all my lists, counts and checklists were unchanged after the upgrades.
Yesterday I downloaded, imported and licensed the new ABA 2006 and AOU 2006 taxonomic updates (I also imported the ABA/AOU 2006 Checklist update).
The process completed with no problems, BUT…
Since the taxonomic updates Herring Gull is GONE again! All my lists/counts are decreased by one (Herring Gull missing), and there is no Herring Gull entry showing in the Sightings Entry fields when either the ABA 2006 or AOU 2006 taxonomies are selected. Herring Gull is also missing from any checklists generated using those taxonomies.
I previously have gone through the process for correcting this problem, including ensuring that my HG sightings are properly designated. I also have imported the Herring Gull/American Herring Gull Checklist Updates.
I assumed the problem was taken care of, since I had no problems following the version 3.6 upgrade!
My Herring Gull sightings and counts are correct and DO show up normally (as “American Herring Gull”) if I select the Clements 2005 taxonomy.
What do I do now? Should I re-import the Herring Gull Checklist Updates again?
Did I do something wrong?
Is the Herring Gull problem going to recur each time I install a new taxonomy update?
Second question… Blue/Dusky/Sooty Grouse!
After I installed the ABA/AOU 2006 taxonomies and checklist update I edited & renamed my (lone) Blue Grouse sighting to the correct species “Sooty Grouse”. Sooty Grouse now shows up properly on my lists, and my counts are correct (except for the Gull), and "all is right with the world"!
HOWEVER, now when I open the Sightings Entry field and select either of the 2006 taxonomies I now see listed:
…
White-tailed Ptarmigan Lagopus leucura
Blue Grouse Dendragapus (no species designation)
Dusky Grouse Dendragapus obscurus
Sooty Grouse Dendragapus fulginosus
Sharp-tailed Grouse Tympanuchus phaisanellus
…
I also see all three grouse listed when I generate a checklist using either of the new taxonomies.
Why is “Blue Grouse” still listed, and why is it the only bird shown without a species designation? Is this as it should be? Is there a way to remove Blue Grouse, or should I leave it alone?
Thanks again for the great program and the excellent support!!
