Tonight I was cleaning up my places lists. I had two under Orphaned Locations, Gibson's Landing and Harrison and Area. These are correctly shown in my NA list of locations as Gibsons and Harrison. I right clicked on each, selected show sightings at this location, and showed no sightings for either. I then selected Delete, and a dialect box informed me that I had sightings associated with the loccations, though I can't find them! What can I do now? (Not that they are doing any harm but I like to be tidy).

HI Alan,
When you choose 'Show sightings at this location', it brings up the 'View Sightings Setup' window. On this window, you have to select one or more taxonomic lists. Sightings DO exist for this location, but based on the tax list you choose, the things you have sightings for may not appear. Choose a world tax list for your birds, or perhaps it is butterflies or trees, or something else. Or, you can select all of your tax lists and then you will surely see the sightings.
Let me know if I can assist further,
Jeff |

Hi Jeff
I did as you suggested, and still show no sightings. Please see screen shot. What am I missing?

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the screenshot. Clear all observers and select ALL taxonomic lists. And try again please.

I have done that, including all the lists I own. Still no joy. (You can't see it in the screenshot, but I also have Extinct Birds and WP 2004 selected). I tried with all these lists and with each observer, too.

Hi Alan,
Can you please backup your database, ZIP the backup and upload it to me via the support >> file upload page on this web site? Then I can have a look to figure this out.
Thanks and sorry for the confusion and hassle.

It's uploading right now. It really isn't a major hassle. No big deal really, but I don't like things that behave mysteriously.

Hello Alan,
I have no file uploaded on the file upload page. It must not have completed. You need to wait until you get a success notification before leaving the page.
I don't like such things behaving mysteriously either - this is why I want to take a look to see if there is a problem here.
If it is easier, I can get onto your system sometime today and look at it there.
Thanks,
Jeff |

I uploaded again. Last time I did leave the page before upload was complete.

Alan,
I had the web site software upgraded last week by my host provider and it appears that the file upload is not working, among other things.
Your file is probably too large to mail (> 5mb).
So - let me get this working first, and then I will let you know.

Hello Alan,
Can you check that yourself please. When I download database.zip from that location, it is 0kb in size.

HI Alan,
Thanks for the effort. I have fixed your database and uploaded it here: http://www.birdersdiary.com/Downloads/database-corrected.zip .
This was due to the import process from Avisys to BD mapping a couple sightings to internal things that are no longer used by any tax list in your database: "Fox Sparrow (superspecies) and Warbling Vireo (superspecies)". That is why View Sightings did not find any sightings even if you selected all tax lists in your database. I deleted those sightings from your database and have uploaded it as per above. You can now delete those two locations if you like.
Take care,
Jeff |

Thanks, Jeff. That has fixed it. I really don't like mysteries on computers, which are supposedly deterministic devices.

The hardware is pretty much deterministic - although it does need an occasional software patch.
It is the other stuff, software, ranging from the microcode in chips, through things like compilers and drivers, to application programs that appear to be less deterministic
And wetware - people - are even less so. |
