Jeff:  I have purchased a new PC.  I have BD 3.649 on my old PC, plus tax lists ABA 2008 and Clements World 2008.

I want to transfer my BD to the new PC and up grade to BD 3.7 and the newer tax lists.  How do I do this?

Hi Peter,

You will like all the new features in 3.7.

Here are the instructions for moving BD to a new computer. Please review for a simple overview of the steps involved.

But, in your case, I would do this

  1. Purchase 3.7 upgrade license at this site
    1. If you are going to purchase ABA/AOU or Clements upgrades - please wait until the end of this week - so you will get the new ones just about to be released.
  2. Install 3.7 on your new computer from the Downloads page.
  3. Follow the instructions from above to move your 3.6 database over to your new system and put it in place for v3.7.

That is all that is required. But let me know if you have any further questions or if I can assist.

I recently go ta new PC with Windows 7 (from Vista).  I followed your instructions to transfer BD and ran the install as an Admin.  Now everytime I use BD, I have to run as an Admin. 

Is this correct?

Hi Ron,

Congrats on your new PC. I love Win7.

You don't have to run the installation as admin; but rather, when you start BD to activate your licenses, then you have to run BD as admin. And only that time. Every other time, run it normally.

Also, be certain that you installed BD into "C:\Birder's Diary" and not under "C:\Program Files...". If you did the latter, remove and reinstall to the former.

And if this doesn't get it, exactly what do you mean by "now everytime I use BD, I have to run as an Admin". Why? What happens if you don't?

Jeff,

Hmm. . . I have BD installed in its correct directory. I can't recall if I ran installation as an admin or not. But, now everytime I run BD I get the warning message asking if I want to allow the program to make changes to my computer. If I click "yes" BD opens.

Perhaps I should just re-install as you instructed above?

Hello Ron,

No need to reinstall. This is not an issue with BD and you said you have it in "C:\Birder's Diary" - so that is all good.

This is an issue with your anti-virus/firewall/security software being screwed too tight.

Take a look at who that message about "letting BD make changes to your computer" is coming from. Probably your security et al software. Usually, this software has exception settings wherein you can tell it to leave BDV37.EXE alone. That is what you need to do. Otherwise, you can live with the message.

I would love to hear back from you on what software is producing that message. I have never heard of anything doing that before.

It's a new HP and the icon has a little blue/yellow shield in the lower right corner.

The message is from User Account Control asking if I want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to my computer. It's the same kind of warning I get when installing a new program.

Now the question is, why are you getting this? I, for example, have an HP Win7 computer with default UAC settings. See screenshot below. I don't get that message.

I realize this is not a big issue, as you just answer the questin and go on; but I wonder why you are getting it.

Ron,

Can you compare your settings to mine? All you have to do is to type 'uac' into the Windows Start button 'Search programs and files' field. You will get the option of 'Change User Account Control settings'. I wonder if you have it on the top setting.

Jeff - My settings are the same as yours (next to top) and it does ask me.

Do you have it set to "always run as admin" in properties?

No - I do not. You always get this "permission" question from UAC when you run BD?

I wonder what BD is doing that requires this - from your system's point of view, but not mine?

I get the same question (maybe a different form) when I open MS Access, not BD

Allow me to confuse a bit. . .

My UAC is exactly the same as the above example. As to why I get it, I think when I installed BD, I must have somehow set it to run as admin because I have that little blue/yellow shield at the bottom of the icon.

So, now I'm thinking to reinstall BD more carefully. . .

Hi Ron,

This might explain it.

No need to reinstall at all. Simply edit the desktop icon and change that setting.

To do this, right-click on the desktop icon for BD and choose Properties...

Choose the "Compatibility" TAB; and uncheck the "Run this program as admin..." checkbox.

Click Ok. Now try to run BD again by simply double-clicking on the icon. Let us know what happens please.
