Hi Randy,
The 3.7 installation looks for a previous installation first; as did the 3.6 installation. If it finds a previous installation, it will propose that as the default - otherwise, the default is "C:\Birder's Diary".
Since Vista, it is advisable to move BD and all programs out from under "C:\Program Files" due to changes in security paradigms in use in Windows. Application developers can still install their programs there, but they have to jump through hoops such as you are finding in order to make things work. It is easier to install to the root directory of "C:\".
Best thing for you to do (what I would do) is - do all steps in the given order please:
- Make a backup of your current installation and place it on your desktop.
- Install BD from the Downloads page on this site to "C:\Birder's Diary" overriding the default offered.
- After this, a Demo database (C:\Birder's Diary\data\database.mdb) will have been installed. Delete it and copy your backup database from the desktop into this location.
- The desktop icon for BD will now point to this location. Remove the 'run as admin' setting if the desktop icon still has this.
- Start BD and you should see your data.
After this is done, you can leave the other BD under C:\program files\ or you can simply delete the "C:\Program Files\Birder's Diary" directory and everything under it. Do NOT do an uninstall, as it will remove system files required by the properly installed BD.
Let me know if I can assist with any of this.
