I did the latest upgrade via network.

Things appeared to go fine.

But now only 2 sightings appear with a date after 8/2010.

Everything else seems to be gone.

Also 2010 tax lists are gone.

Tried to restore last backup from old version but that failed with permission denied message.

Randy

That was tough.
Took me 1 minute after doing the post.
Running Windows 7, have a desktop shortcut for BD.
Had set it to automatically run as administrator.
After the update the shortcut still worked, but apparently it was no longer running as administrator
Ran it as admin and things are now fixed!
Jeff - who says that testers can only find problems!

Have a good one!

Hi Randy,

Thanks for the purchase and staying current on tax lists. Man - you have no idea how much work goes into getting those ready and all the quality checks that goes into that.

The symptoms and facts you mentioned tell me that you have BD installed under "C:\program files\..." - yes? My recommendation, due to new security constraints that started with Vista is to reinstall BD to "C:\Birder's Diary" only. Then, you no longer have this problem and no longer need to run BD as Admin unless you are activating your user license.

Let me know on where you have it installed please.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

My install is to C:\Program Files (x86)\Birder's Diary
That was probably the default for installation.
I normally use defaults, thinking that updates would work better that way.
But maybe that isn't the best way to go.
I've never heard about there being a difference in needing to run as admin.

What would be the easiest and safest way to uninstall and reinstall?
Hopefully activation will be simple after I did that.

Hi Randy,

The 3.7 installation looks for a previous installation first; as did the 3.6 installation. If it finds a previous installation, it will propose that as the default - otherwise, the default is "C:\Birder's Diary".

Since Vista, it is advisable to move BD and all programs out from under "C:\Program Files" due to changes in security paradigms in use in Windows. Application developers can still install their programs there, but they have to jump through hoops such as you are finding in order to make things work. It is easier to install to the root directory of "C:\".

Best thing for you to do (what I would do) is - do all steps in the given order please:

  1. Make a backup of your current installation and place it on your desktop.
  2. Install BD from the Downloads page on this site to "C:\Birder's Diary" overriding the default offered.
  3. After this, a Demo database (C:\Birder's Diary\data\database.mdb) will have been installed. Delete it and copy your backup database from the desktop into this location.
  4. The desktop icon for BD will now point to this location. Remove the 'run as admin' setting if the desktop icon still has this.
  5. Start BD and you should see your data.

After this is done, you can leave the other BD under C:\program files\ or you can simply delete the "C:\Program Files\Birder's Diary" directory and everything under it. Do NOT do an uninstall, as it will remove system files required by the properly installed BD.

Let me know if I can assist with any of this.

Jeff
