When trying to install Birder's Diary 3.6 for a trial inspection using the Network Installation option, I recieve an INSTALL error message reading: "Could not communicate to the network server, error 3.  404 not found."

I am running Window XP and IE 7.

Can you help?  Thanks.

Hi.

I have heard about uncounted issues caused by IE7 since its release. On my system alone, the keyboard mapping gets messed up in IE7. So, I have to wonder if IE7 is the culprit. Do you have IE6 or FireFox or NetScape to test on? This would just eliminate or confirm IE7 as the problem. You can download FireFox from www.mozilla.org for free.

If that is not the problem, the error would indicate a network issue. Try again today. If you are still getting that error, test other internet connectivity - well obviously you can connect to this web site. Hmmm...

One other issue, if you have internet connectivity and the problem still persists today after trying another browser, your antivirus-firewall software (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, etc etc) could be causing this. So, temporarily disable all such software and try it again.

Please post back and let me know how this works.

Jeff

As suggested, I attempted to install the Diary using Foxfire, but received the same error message.  Any other thoughts?

Thanks.

Hi,

Yes - please try my other initial suggestion of disabling all antivirus/firewall software first. There have been 10 installations today (one of which I performed for a customer) with no problems. The problem is most probably antivirus/firewall software.

Let me know if you need assistance with disabling these.

What kind of connnection do you have? Dial-up or other? A bad dial-up connection may also be the culprit here.

Let me know please,
Jeff
