I am using a 30-day trial version of Birder's Diary. When I try to export a LifeList Report, I get an error message: "3420- - Object invalid or no longer set. (DAO, Recordset)" I tried rebooting but the problem persists. Thank you, Rita

Hello  Rita,

I have never seen this error before. Thanks for the exact error message.

  • What version of BD are you running exactly?
  • How are you trying to export your report? Please give me all the steps.
  • What version of Windows are you running? (e.g. XP, 2000, ME, etc)

Usually, these types of problems indicate a faulty installation. And are usually easily fixed by simply re-running the installation. Quick and painless. Sometimes, however, the faulty installation is due to antivirus/firewall software preventing proper installation/configuration of system files. In this case, disable all such software for the duration of the re-installation. This fixes about 98% of these problems.

Let me know please.

Jeff

Jeff, I am running v 3.6 of BD. I set up and save a report working through the Reports - Lifelist tab. I can print the report and go back an access the report any time. When I try to export the report, I go to File - Import/Export and follow the steps. I am running Windows XP Media Center v. 5.1. Thank you for your help. Rita

Probably in late January for the next release.

Just curious, but the "Report Export" feature was meant to share saved reports with other BD users. I find it to be one of the least used features. Is this what you are using it for? Or is there another need that I have not foreseen?

Thanks again.

Jeff

Jeff, I was on a trip in October and I entered the bird sightings into BD to see if the software is appropriate for me. I want to send a list of the birds to one of my travelling companions. I thought the EXCEL file would be a good way to share the data. She could then annotate or sort the data however she wants. Rita

I thought that "report export" simply exported the format and parameters for the report, not the report itself.

In the print function I believe you can export the report with data.

Is that correct?

Steve

Hi Rita,

Thanks for the explanation. That is what I thought you might be trying to do. And I will show you the correct way now.

The method you were trying to use is for sharing report definitions, not the actual data produced by the report itself. As you know, you can produce PDF or HTML files to send to your friend for review.

But, if you want to send an Excel file, which is also easy, you want to use the View/Edit window. Select the sightings you want to share by selecting the proper settings from the View/Edit Setup window, then click Continue.

Then, once in the View/Edit window itself, click on Select All, then on the Export button. This will create a file that can be imported into Excel. Mail that file to your friend.

This process will export the visible fields on your View/Edit window in the order that they appear. If you want to add/remove or change the order of those fields before exporting, right-click on the grid for a popup menu with functions for doing this.

Let me know if I can assist with any of this.

Jeff

Thank you, Jeff. I recorded multiple entries for some birds if we saw them on more than one day or at more than one location. I was trying to export a species list rather than a sightings list. I realize I can delete duplicate entries in the method you describe before exporting, but I thought maybe there was a cleaner way to export to Excel just a list of the species we saw. Rita

Hi Rita,

Unfortunately - there is not. The only report that gives a list of unique species is the Trip report. And the reporting engine only outputs to HTML, PDF, Printer, and text formats.
