Jeff,

The name of the Easternmost province in Canada is "Newfoundland and Labrador". BD still uses the old name of Newfoundland.

Also, in the ABA listing report, the 2 letter code should be changed from NF to NL.

Note: this is not a recent lump, just a name change!

Happy New Year.

Marc

When you say, "BD still uses the old name of Newfoundland.", I assume that you mean on the Locations screen. If so, it is not an easy fix - I say that based on having made location name change previously. Based on the difficulty, I suspect the changes will not be made prior to the next release.

As for the ABA abbreviation, you will have to take that up with the ABA. The reporting form at http://www.americanbirding.org/bigday/2006listform.pdf lists the code as NF, and we are just copying the form, right or wrong. I believe that when the list compiler was a Canadian, the code was changed to NL, but when the compiler reverted to someone in the States, the code reverted as well.

Steve

Hi,

What is the problem with changing the name of any location in BD? It should be a simply task. Please shed some light on this for me.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff, you are correct that it is easy for a user to change a location name in a single database.

It is more difficult to update it in a release for all users, since that takes code to update both the Locations and ABAThreshold tables.

Gotcha Steve. Thanks.

Is the ABA report code "NF" hard-coded to look for a location by name of "Newfoundland"? I mean, if they changed the name of that location, would the ABA report fail to properly report that area?

Just checked. In at least v3.6, users cannot change the location name "Newfoundland". When you attempt to, the result is a message box stating that the ABA report uses this name, and it cannot be changed.

A query matches Locations to ABAThresholds by location name, so both tables have to be changed in a release.

Which leaves us with the question - do we want to change to NL, even if the ABA still uses NF?

Steve

I wouldn't think so. ABA is the authority. And until they change it, then the ABA report should reflect their standard format. But someone let us know if there is another argument for changing it.

Jeff,

I have e-mailed the ABA and drawn their attention to the fact that they are using NF on their report form and that it should be changed to NL. If they get around to changing it, then you can proceed and correct the BD version.

BTW, the ABA is not consistent. In the 2005 Reports they use NL on page 42 and NF on the reporting form; they use "Newfoundland and Labrador" on page 33 and "Newfoundland" on page 77.

Let's keep the Provinces' and States' name changes to a miniumum.
