Jeff,

I've been running Birder's Diary 3.5 with no problem for some time now.  I just noticed that when I "backup" the data went to C: \Program Files\Thayers\data\database.mdb  ,  This didn't seem right so I replaced "Thayers" with "Birder's Diary"  and hit the BACKUP key.  I don't remember the message I got but I but I just closed the program.

Today when I hit the icon for Birders Diary I get this message (I hope the screen captuew worked)

What do I do now?

Rosemary

Hi Rosemary,

The directory you changed it to is where the real database is kept - "database.mdb".

I can't imagine how you overwrote it. But you specified to overwrite your real database with a backup and that must have corrupted it.

Please grab a copy of database.mdb from the other location that you were using and place it in c:\program files\birders diary\data

Jeff

p.s. If you have trouble doing this, perhaps I should get onto your system and have a look. But I am leaving for the day right now, so we can do this tomorrow morning.

Jeff,

Done. Now I can open BD. When I do a BACKUP what should the backup file be? c:\program files\ then what?

Great! You can back your database up to any place you like. Preferably another hard drive on your system in case the drive with your main database should fail.

BD will only backup to local hard drives. So if you have two, e.g. C: and D:, and your main database is on C:, then backup to D:\BD-backups\database_bck.mdb, for example.

If you do not have to local hard drives on your system (CDroms and ZIP drives don't count), then back it up to your local drive, e.g. c:\program files\birders diary\data\database_bck.mdb, for example, and then move that file "database_bck.mdb" off to CDrom.

Let me know if I can assist further,
Jeff

Hello Rosemary,

I guess you don't have that drive or that directory. Everyone's system is different.

Click on the BROWSE button in the Backup window to select a valid drive and directory.

The Browse button sent me to my Desktop. Didn't want my
backup ther so I went into the BD files and in DATA created a folder and put the backup there. Everything seems to work now.

Thanks.
