Jeff Jones

Thanks for your response…

Further details…I have a DELL Dimension 8300 machine 120GB/512 w/~40GB free space running XP PRO.  I experienced a hard disc crash and am trying to rebuild my system.  I have Birder’s Diary 2.5, a Beta version of BDWE v3.0.3 (04/02/03) & a production version of BDWE 3.0.0 database 3.1.3 and recently updated to 3.5.X (I’m not sure of the version) installed on my hard drive (C from the internet prior to the crash.  My backup copy in on an external drive (F named Bird_Sightings.mdb.

When I try to do a backup/restore, I get an error# 3356 “you attempted to open a database that is already opened exclusively by user ‘admin’ on machine ….  Try again when the data base is available.  Restore unsuccessful

I then get the Run – install screen & get the message “The backup file already exists. Want to overwrite it w/ a new copy? Y/N”.  Of course I say no.  Sometimes I get the message “The backup database’s version (3.5.0) & current database’s version (3.1.3) do not match!  You may have installed an update that has rendered your backup incompatible or you have reinstalled the software w/o applying all of the necessary updates.  The only solution is to reinstall the software to the correct version number and retry”.

I also installed ScreenHunter on my machine, but ignorant how to use it to capture all the errors.

I had a similar problem w/GBNA and Dave Diehl poked around my machine & found version conflicts.  Being a long time beta tester for Thayer, he sent me the correct version.

I just want to be able to bring BDWE back to where it was before my crash & not loose all my data.

Gino

Hi Gino,

This shouldn't be too hard to recover from. Glad Dave got you going with GBNA - he's a good guy!

You say you have a backup (F: bird_sightings.mdb). I assume that is a backup from v3.5.x? Assuming this is correct, just do the following:

  1. Install the latest version of v3.5 from the bottom of the Downloads page on this web site
  2. After installation, it will have created a blank databaes in c:\program files\birder's diary\data\database.mdb.
  3. Delete that file and copy your backup from F:bird_sightings.mdb into this directory and rename the file to "database.mdb".
  4. Start v3.5
  5. If you have an upgrade license from v3.0 to v3.5, then you will need to activate the user license by
    1. click on Help | License Information
    2. Click on Unlock by Phone (or is it Unlock by Email in 3.5?)
    3. reply here, to this post, with the two user codes on that window
    4. I will reply here with the two reg key codes that you will enter
  6. Then activate any taxonomic list licenses by clicking on the Unlock Now button and entering your License IDs and password pairs.

That should take care of it if the assumptions above are correct.

Let us know,

Jeff

Jeff, I have a similar problem and history. I need to reload an old 3.0.2 db.  3.6 was running fine.  But I need to backtrack from an old db.
When I went to add the license keys to "unlock now", from the upgrade help page, I got a really odd and long error message; after repeating that with a couple versions of passwords with caps/not, I was going to send you a shot of it  - now I get the message the user ID has been used the alloted number of times so I guess that means I need reupping, I forget how to do that?  If you want I can still get you that shot if you want it?

Hi Bob,

I must admit that I am confused as to what problem you are experiencing. I have reset your activation count on your license.

You mention about that "3.6 was running fine" - but I only show a license for you for 3.5. Perhaps you meant 3.5.

If you continue to have problems, please write down or capture the complete error message for me.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff hi, I tried the license/password after fresh boot here tonight and here is a shot of the message, "exception breakpoint".  Program is 3.6.3, I haven't used it for a long while but it loads and seems to run fine.  At this point I can't recall how I got to 3.6.3 but I will check emails from you later and send you it if I find one.

Hi Bob,

Please upgrade to the latest version of v3.6 (v3.6.29) from the downloads page.

Also, reply back with the License ID that you are attempting to use - that is producing this error.

I assume that you are getting this error after hitting the OK button on the "Unlock Now" window - right?

Jeff, the update doesn't seem to work, more like it isn't connecting from this end.  I'll check it tomorrow too.  201162.  Yes.

Jeff, yesterday I used the check for update option at the menu Help selection, that didn't seem to be able to connect with the security levels I have set here.

Before checking in here tonight I went to the download section of the site and started up the download of ~122mb that is daunting for me as a dialup user.  As I recall a long while back you had set the download so it would restart when the connection was lost!!  A very NICE feature for dialup users. (Guessing there are not many of us left, but every beta system needs a few lowenders.   )   I am sure I will need it a couple times.

The download is working great!

Jeff, the download didn't restart when the dialup service cut me off.  I also tried pausing the dload, then cutting off the ISP, then restarting the ISP and resuming the download but as soon as I did that the dload form went blank and I had to start it from the beginning.  Maybe I was remembering some other dload somewhere that restarted from where the ISP service ended, I'm not sure, that was some time ago.  So I went to the library, but they didn't have a way to save the dload.  I am going to see if I can get an ok to do it at work.

Ok Bob,

The Network Installation link is supposed to restart if interrupted. But the Single File Download will not.

Jeff, thks, the instructions are very clear on that point, that must be what I used early last year, and had I taken the time to read the instructions here that explain the restart feature I'd have the download by now even with dialup!
[Edit 2/12/07: I should add that with the update to 3.6.29, which went perfectly from the network installation platform, v29 is great!]
thks Bob
