| I just upgraded my computer to run the Windows Vista operating system. When I launch BD 3.6.29 I am told that my demo of BD has expired and that I need to purchase the application to use it. I have owned 3.6 since it came out; anyone else had trouble with BD and Windows Vista? |

Hi Vireo,
Hmmm. Did you reapply your license IDs, exit and restart BD to see if this solved the problem?
Let us all know please, Jeff |

| Thanks, Jeff! That worked. BD also told me that I needed to activate my various taxonomic lists. Clements 2005, Butterflies of North America, and Whales and Dolphins went fine, but Clements Extinct and Western Palearctic 2004 did not. In the latter two cases, the program tells me the license ID has already been used the allotted number of times.
If anyone else is thinking about upgrading to Vista, my advice is, don't as this time. Several of my programs are no longer working, the most important of which is my backup program (Palm Hotsync will not work with Outlook 2007, though it does work under Vista). I am just glad the issue with BD is as easy to solve as it is. |

Hi Lars,
I reset your activation counts. Reapply your "3.0 to 3.5" license, then your "3.5 to 3.6". And that should take care of it.
Let me know if you need anything else. Jeff |

| Thanks, Jeff! That worked; all my lists are activated. By the way, I am curious as to what might have happened. In that vein, are these ID numbers stored in the Windows Registry? |

Hi Lars,
Yes - the License IDs are stored in a number of places; the Registry being just one. If the licensing software detects that any copy has been tampered or removed, it will reset to Demo mode. Easily solved by re-applying the licenses.

Jeff,
I have a similiar problem. When I launch BD on the new computer running Vista, I get the window about it being the demo version. I unlock using the the License ID and password I got the last time I bought a taxanomy from you. It seems to work and says I have an adavanced license. The problem is it does not unlock any of the taxanomies I have purchased. I apparently only have taxanomies I have built myself or downloaded from the forums before you bought BD. Even that is not not saved because when I close and restart BD I am again told it is only the demo version.

Hi Mike,
I am not sure I follow what is happening.
But, you should do this:
- disable all antivirus/firewall software you have during this process
- enter your 3.0 to 3.5 license id using Unlock Now on the License Info window
- enter your 3.5 to 3.6 license id
- enter your 2005 trees license id
- now get a screen capture of the License Info window with the list of active licenses visible
- exit BD
- Start BD again and display the License Info window. What does it have now?
Let me know,
Jeff |

Jeff,
I tried a screen capture but was not able to paste into here. After step one get the following error message.
"You have attempted to register a License which is only meant to upgrade an existing licensed 3.x version of Birder’s diary to 3.5. The application has determined that you do not have a licensed version of 3.x prior to 3.5"
I still have the original version 3 CD and can reinstall it but it seems like there ought to be an easier way. Also Jeff I can't seem to find the license ID for the 3.5 to 3.6 upgrade. I know I downloaded this when I was in Alaska for 3 months last year and somewhere in all the traveling I seem to have lost the printout. Is there any chance you have this in your data somewhere. I have the other two you referred to sitting here but like I am unable to use them, because of the above error.
Thanks for the help.
Mike

Hi Mike,
Disregard the 3.0 to 3.5 license and apply the other two.
You can logon to the Online Store and view your missing license ID as long as you remember your password.
Use the Purchase menu at the top of this web page and you will see the Logon to the Online Store page.
Jeff
p.s. the only issue I am not sure of is whether the 3.6 license alone will activate your old tax lists. Let me know. |

Also Mike, in order to include pictures in your posts, you need to click on the Add Reply link at the bottom left instead of using the Quick Editor at the bottom of the thread listing. The Quick Editor does not have any of those features.
Once in the full featured editor, there is a spot below it for Message Attachments where you will select your screen shot file to be uploaded. It cannot be PASTED into the editor.

Jeff,
You may have already figured it out, but since my problem seem sto be identical to one in new thred started by Fugle. I jumped over there since my issue seem to be no longer related to Windows Vista.

Right Mike. Your Vista upgrade is changing the computer ID settings. Therefore, the licensing software assumes you are running on an illegal machine and resets to Demo.
Then, licensing your old 2004 tax lists becomes a different issue that I take up in the other forum. Jeff |
