Using 3.6.49 as a demo on a new Windows Vista Home Basic computer. When I try an Report and click on Print/Preview, I get a "BDV36" dialog box with the error:
Run-time Error '13':
Type mismatch
I have un-installed the Anti-virus software and re-install 3.6.49 with no change. Still get the error.
Am currently a 3.0.0 user. Tried installing that first followed by your 3.0.2 patch. It ran but also failed in reports with a different error message. Un-installed that and installed 3.6 to see if that was better and got the above message. |

Hi Larry,
No need to install 3.0.2 or 3.5 - you can go straight to 3.6.
Now - why is 3.6 giving this error?
Are you using the default database installed with 3.6.49 or did you copy your 3.0 database over to the 3.6 install directory as per the instructions on the "upgrading to 3.6 from 3.0" page on this site?
Are you running BD in Administrator mode as per the instruction in the two FAQ items at the top of this page?
When/where exactly do you get this error? After clicking on the Reports toolbar icon; after the report window displays; exactly where please?
Let's start here and figure this out.
Sorry for the problems.

We get the same error using the delivered demo database with 3.6.49 or using the 3.0 database copied per your 3.0 to 3.6 upgrade instructions.
We are running BD in Administrator mode. We right-clicked on the icon and selected Run as Administrator.
Finally, the error comes up immediately after clicking on the Preview/Print button. We set up the report parameters (Observer, etc.) , click on the Preview/Print button and error pops up.
Thanks for your help.
Dave
PS: My name is Dave Ruhde. I was helping my father, Larry, with this last weekend. I'm helping him over the phone now until I get back up there in a couple weeks. I know I tried it with User Account Control off using an Administrator
account and still got the same problem.

Hi Dave,
Ok. Let's troubleshoot this with the default vanilla database that gets installed.
We have plenty of users running BD 3.6.49 on Vista with only the problem of security access issues solved by the two FAQs at the top of this page. No one has reported this error before.
Is your father's computer on the internet? Does he have a fast connection? I could get onto his computer and have a look tomorrow if this is the case.
Who is the maker of your father's computer? (e.g. Dell, HP, etc.)
Did this computer ever have a previous version of BD installed on it?
One thing we might try is to remove all keys in the Registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Birders Diary\Settings. Make sure you exit BD first. This would be the first thing I would try if I get onto your dad's computer.
I am leaving the office for the night now, and will be back in the morning.

Hi, I started getting this error this afternoon when I click on "View/Edit". I had just made some corrections and wanted to continue when this started to occur. I have tried clidking on other buttons and those functions seem to be running normally. I'd like to be able to clean up some old location changes. Any ideas? |

Hi,
I think I know the basic area where this problem is at.
What version of BD are you running? Are you on Vista or some other version of Windows?
This only seems to be happening on Vista. I think they tightened their rules on data in the Registry and now it is producing errors where it runs fine on XP and other non-Vista versions.
I think I can fix this easily, but I need to figure out which setting is causing this problem. Can I get onto your system sometime to have a look?
Let me know. I will be in and out a couple times this evening and then back tomorrow morning.
Very sorry for the problem. Jeff |

Sure. I'd appreciate the help. I will be working a shift at Tri-State Bird Rescue in Delaware this morning. Should be home around 2 and will check in then. You can email me with a good time to contact you, if that would help. thanks.

Follow-up:
Got onto Jim's Vista system (running 3.6.49 of BD) today.
I knew from other systems running Vista (the only OS that this error occurs on) that by clearing all Names that start with "frmSightingsViewFilter2.*" in the Registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Birders Diary\Settings, the problem would go away. The problem is, I didn't know which Name was the real culprit. So, I went down the list of settings that match the name above and deleted each one and tried to open the "View/Edit Setup" window, each one failed until I got to frmSightingsViewFilter2.optPrimaryDesc, which was of type REG_SZ and value of "True" or "False". Once I deleted that Name, I could open the View/Edit Setup window without error.
But, upon resetting the value, it would not fail any more! No matter what I set it to "True" or "False" it would not fail.
So, while Jim can use the View/Edit function again, I am no closer to figuring out what is the problem.
If any one else gets this problem, please let me know.

Hi Jeff
I am getting the same error on Vista running 3.6. It occurred after I added the 3rd leg onto a master trip and was going to add more sightings.
Please let me know what I can do to help.
Thanks

Hello Jacques,
Please tell me where you get the error? Is it after clicking the View/Edit toolbar button?

Hi Dave,
My name is Janet, I have had this problem for about 6 months now. Jeff went into my system and was not able to find the problem. It was suggested to me that it must be a problem with my computer....I had it checked out extensively and no problem was found with my system. I still use the program because I really like it.
When I want a report of my sightings , I just hit select all in my add/edit area and export my sightings. Then I open it in Excel. I know this is a pain but I found no other alternative. It still says run-time Error "13" every time I try to make a report ....then the program crashes.
If you ever get this solved I would be very interested in the answer. Good Luck |

Hi Janet,
I think I can fix this for you now if I can get access to your system.
Are you on Windows XP? (If not, what version of Windows?) What version of BD are you running?
It should only take a minute or two. Let me know if you would like for me to do this and when you would be at your computer to let me on.
Thanks, Jeff |

Hi Jeff,
I am a Windows XP user, ....not planning on going to Vista just yet.
Let me know when you would be available and I will try to get on line.
Thanks Janet.
PS
I still really like the program even with my little bug. |

Things have been running smoothly until this afternoon, when I got the run-time error message when I tried to add a couple of sightings. I deleted a bunch of files from the registry as per previous posts, but no luck. I finally did a "system restore" back to three days ago. Seems to be working for now.
