| I created new locations on BD, but when I went to close the window after finishing, I got a run time error and the program shut down. When I restarted, the locations were on the location tree, so I added my sightings for the day. As I did this, Petey did not give me any lifer celebration and they were all lifers for these new locations. When I was done, I tried to print a report. It told me there was no data for those locations or dates. I thought that the new locations could be deleted and I could start over, but when I try to delete the location, it tells me that there are sightings attached to the location, but I sure can't find them!!!! Please help me. I am entering data for my masters thesis!!! |

Hi Tinamou99:
This is easily fixed.
- Start BD
- Open the Locations window
- Add a new location (Test) and make it a child of the WORLD location.
- When back at the Locations window (after adding the Test location), Delete the new Test location.
- Close the Locations window.
- The Location Performance table will be rebuilt.
Everything will work as expected now and you will not have lost any data.
Please let me know either way.

| Thanks for the quick reply, there has been progress! I still do not get any sightings come up when I try to view/edit sightings for this location, but I can get a location report fromt the report menu. It will give me a sightings report down to the point level. (area, section, transect, point levels) for today's data(sightings). Thanks again, this is a great step in the right direction. |

| On BD, if I use the View/Edit button to try to see my sightings for todays locations, I get nothing, but if I use the Reports button, I can create reports that will include todays sightings, for any level on the location tree. I would like to be able to edit my sightings, if I need to. |

Both the View/Edit and the Reports window use the same logic/routines to display your sightings. So, check ALL of your settings on the View/Edit setup window to make sure you don't have something selected that is limiting the sightings displayed.
Let me know, Jeff |

| Eureka!!! The comments box was checked and when I unchecked it, up came the sightings, all 131 of them. Thank you so much. It is so much easier to make daily reports, species lists, etc using BD than Excel. I still use Excel for the stats and pivot tables, but it is so easy to do the reports on BD. Thanks for fixing this for me. BTW, I did download the screen capture, so that in the future, I can give you more info. |

I would love to hear (and so would others), when you get time, exactly how you use Excel with your BD data.
What kind of stats and pivot tables you produce?
How you get your data from BD to Excel (I assume you are using the Export feature on the View/Edit window - that is what that is there for)?
This would be very nice to get an understanding of when you get a chance.
Thanks much, Jeff |

Hi Jeff,
I finished finals and classes and now I have extra time for birding and entering my sightings. I have not figured out how to export my sightings to Excel. All that I entered on Excel last year, over 6,000 of them, are in four letter code in one column, as per instructions from my prof. Example:
BEKI
BEKI
NOCA
NOCA
NOPA
ETTI
BCCA
BCCA
BCCA
etc, so I am not sure if I can transfer the sightings from one to the other. It is so much easier for me to create a species list or first seen date list from BD than Excel. I only have about two weeks from this year entered on BD and I have been entering under four letter code but I just enter BEKI max # 2, NOCA 2, NOPA 1, ETTI 1, BCCH 3, etc. To make it compatable to Excel, would I have to enter each sighting on BD just as I would on Excel?
As far as stats go, I will be using Chi-squared tests, since the data is count data. The stats and pivot tables are used to compare the birds of the riparian(wooded river area) to the upland(higher, dryer elevation area) in a highly urbanized or at least suburbanized area. I'm sorry but I am a real beginner with most computer programs (50 year old non-traditional student, whose kids know sooooo much more than I do about computers) and my prof set them up for me. I would be happy to e-mail you the Excel sheet with the table, so that you can have a look.

Hi Ruth,
You can export sightings from the View/Edit window. Select the sightings to export, and then click the Export toolbar button. That is all. It will export the fields you have on the View/Edit window.
Let me know if I missed the question or can assist further.
