I have v. 3.5 basic, and am not planning to upgrade. I need to transfer the program and files to my new computer. Where does the program put the user data files, tax list, and other files etc. I still have the original disk, and I have only the 11/2005 ABA, which was downloaded when I first installed BD. Please advise on the best way to do this without losing my data and tax list.

Also, does the license cover using this program on two separate computers? (Both are and will be on my home network.)

Hi,

The process is fairly easy and straightforward.

  1. Install 3.5 from the bottom of the Downloads page onto your new computer.(You must be logged into this web site to access the install.)
  2. After the installation completes, delete the database that the install creates on your new computer - "c:\program files\birder's diary\data\database.mdb"
  3. Copy your old database into that location with the same name.
  4. Start 3.5; it will say that it is in Demo mode.
If your 3.5 license is NOT an upgrade license then Click on Unlock Now and enter your License IDs and password (user license and any taxonomic list licenses); else, if your license is an upgrade license, then
    1. Click on Unlock by Phone
    2. Post back here with the two user codes on the next window; do not close this window
    3. I will post back with the two reg key codes you will enter to activate your license

Yes - you can run BD on both of your systems!

Jeff,

I have the 11-2005 ABA TaxList. How do I transfer that? Don't know if you need them, but the two reg codes you sent me when I first downloaded the TaxList are:

667385793 and 1648762929

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

All you need to do is to follow the instructions provided by me above. Your tax lists and everything is in the database file.

To activate your ABA-2005 tax list, simply

  1. Start BD
  2. Click on Help | License Information
  3. Click on Unlock Now
  4. Enter your ABA-2005 license id and password

The new reg key codes from the past are of no good at this point.

Jeff,

Aftter downloading BD 3.5, I hit "Unlock Now" and got the following message:
This Licensce ID has already been used the allotted number of times. Please contact sales@BirdersDiary.com to obtain more software keys.
This is the same meassage I got when I first activated BD 3.5 originally, and you and I had a devil of a time getting it opened.

Also, is the ABA-2005 taxlist you mention above the 11-2005 list or the earlier 2005 TaxList? I have the 11-2005 update, and I remember some snafu about herring gulls, is this fixed in this update?

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Go ahead and do as I suggested concerning the "Unlock by Email" steps and send me your user codes. Also reply with your ABA license ID, so I can reset your activations on that. Then you will be able to activate it as stated above.

Sorry for the hassle.
Jeff

Hi Scott,

Here are Reg Key 1 and Reg Key 2 to be entered into the fields from the "Unlock by Phone" window:

660699149
1795465329

Now, I just need your ABA license ID so that I can reset the activiations.

Jeff,

Where would I find the ABA license number?

Hi Scott,

Ok - first things first - I assume BD is now properly licensed per the last step. Yes?

Now, your ABA license number, where did you purchase the license, at the Online Store here or via a distributor? If here, at the Online Store, then just let me have your last name and I can look it up and fix it. If at a distributor, then it will be on a sticker on the inside of your CDrom case.

Let me know please and we can get this taken care of. Sorry for all the hassles.

Jeff,

I was given the CDROM as a Christmas gift. The licenseID is 263014 and the password is TBSxxxxxx. I have unlocked the program, but the only choice for the TaxList is ABA-North America-2004. The CD I received had the ABA-2005, but you had given me the Nov-2005 update in a download as indicated below.

Hi Scott,

Yes - for all the trouble you have been having, I will give you the Nov update for free. Just import it (there was no need to removed it from the Birder's Diary database) again and

go to Help | License Information
click on Unlock by Phone
send me the two user codes on that window; do not close this window
I will return the two reg key codes that you enter to license the Nov update.

fyi

Hi Scott,

Thanks for helping me understand. Sorry for being so slow.

I have added a new license for you for the ABA-2005-Nov tax list. The license ID is "759697". The password is the same as that for your other ABA tax license.

Please use the "Unlock Now" button to enter this Id and password. That should do it. But please let me know that all is working now.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

It looks like it worked. At least I am not getting any message saying that it is unlicensed or demo only. One question though, the Tax List menu on the Sightings Entry Setup GUI has a variety of choices, some of which appear to be available (various 2004 bird TaxLists, e.g. Clement World 2004, and some that require license, e.g. AOU-2005, mammals, dolphins butterflies). Question, are these 2004 bird TaxLists free to use with the BD v. 3.5 license?

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott, If you purchased an upgrade to 3.5 from 3.0 license, the answer is yes. Otherwise, no. You must purchase a license (Online Store page on this site) to use the latest tax lists. The 2004 versions are no longer available. Instructions for purchasing, downloading and importing are on the Downloads::Tax List Instructions page on this site.

Let me know if I can assist further,
Jeff

Jeff,

One last question the "data" folder on my old computer, in addition to the database.mdb file, contained: americanherringgull.csv; Birds-ABA-2005.csv; attachment.csv; Birds-ABA-2005-Nov.csv; Birds-ABA-2005-Nov-Checklist.csv; herringgull.csv; ChecklistImport.Log; and TaxonomyImport.Log files. None of these were in the datafolder that was loaded on the new computer. Do I need to copy these into the data folder on my new computer as well as my old database.mdb file?

Thanks,
Scott
