06/21/2007 1:05 PM Alert

I recently had to uninstall and then reinstall everything on my PC, including Birders Diary 3.0.  I re-registered online after restoring all my data and components of the program.  But, when I go to create a report and read the data there, I get the following error message:

Runtime error:  Component vsprint8.ocx or one of its dependencies not correctly registered:  a file is missing or invalid.

I can open the program, but I cant create any reports because of this.  Please help.  email is sjanko@optonline.net.

Hi:

You say you installed 3.0, but vspprint8.ocx was not part of BD until 3.5 - I think.

Also, I was not aware that online registration was still available for v3.0.

So some of this sounds very strange to me.

I assume you have a backup of your 3.0 database and perhaps a full copy of the database file (database.mdb). Make sure you hang onto these.

What version of Windows are you running? (e.g. XP, 2000, Vista, etc)

Many folks that are running 3.0, installed 3.0 from CDrom, and then applied the upgrades to get them to 3.0.2 online. The 3.0.2 upgrade is available on this site at the bottom of the Product Info :: Upgrading from 2.x or 3.0 page. So try installing that, if when you start 3.0, it says you are at 3.0.0 or 3.0.1.

Otherwise, this type of error indicates that the installation had errors. So, in that case, make sure you turn off ALL antivirus software and rerun the installation from a privileged account. This fixes 95% of these problems.

Let me know on some of the above questions and concerns and also how this works out.

Jeff

Hi. I re-registered on the phone, the woman who I spoke with gave me the number. Perhaps you can check it by the License key like she did. The number is 1052-4007-0985-0801. The version is 3.0.2 and the database is 3.1.5.

My OS is Windows XP Professional with SP2.

Everything is backed up on the computer and also in my external drive.

Also, I have Nortons Corporate which was installed and it cant be turned off. All I can do is disable Auto-protect if I have to.

Hi Stephen,

Hmmm. You must have talked to Linda. In either case, the program to register your v3.0 product is also at the bottom of the same page referenced in my last post. So, no need to call Thayer and ask them again - just fyi.

Thanks for all the info.

So, when you start 3.0, it says "v3.0.2 and database version 3.1.5" - right? You are then at the latest version of 3.0.

By any chance did you install and remove v3.6? That might explain the reference to vsprint8.ocx.

In either case, this should easily be resolved by re-running the installation and disabling all antivirus features that you can. If it doesn't run after re-installation, reboot and try to run BD (perhpas it needs a reboot to register the OCX in this case).

let me know please,

Jeff

I am confused about this whole procedure with registration. Perhaps a little later you can help me out with one of the sharing tools. Just tell me which one. lol

Hi Stephen,

Let's get 3.0 working again and we will work on the registration. In short, you don't need to register v3.0.x. You just download and run the activation program. That takes care of it.

Let me know how the re-installation goes with antivirus disabled as much as possible.

Ok. I backed up my data, re-install the software, restored the data and I get the same error message.

Maybe you can simply send me the 3.5 version for free, or at least at a discounted price. ; ) Then all I need do is transfer the data.

Stephen,

This error indicates that your antivirus software is interfering with the proper installation of system files and libraries.

Let's see if installing v3.6 from the Downloads page (click on the Network Installation link) will install and run correctly.

Let me know please,
Jeff

But wouldn't I have to purchase version 3.6???
I had disabled auto-protect and my firewall when I tried the reinstallation.

Hi Stephen,

No - you won't have to purchase 3.6 just for this test. It installs with a 30-day demo period. We just want to see if it will install and run.

I don't think the firewall has anything to do with this problem. This is strictly an Antivirus program issue.

Jeff
p.s. you don't have to send me emails in addition to posting here. I get auto notifications of any posts in these forums. Thanks.

I installed 3.6. But what is now happening, 3.0.2 is working. What is happening? Is 3.0 borrowing that file from 3.6? And will I get the error again when I uninstall this demo of 3.6????

Interesting. Very interesting.

Yes, and Yes.

Place a copy of your 3.0 database into the 3.6 installation directory (c:\program files\birder's diary\data\database.mdb) overwriting the blank database put there by the installation. You should be able to run 3.6 and see your data.

My guess is that if you remove 3.6, Microsoft will remove the VSprint8.ocx (even though it is not supposed to) and you will be back in the same boat.

I cannot explain why the 3.0 installation failed but the 3.6 succeeded in correctly installing the OCX file. There are a myriad of possible explanations, but I doubt it has anything to do with the BD installation. Both installations were created with the same version of the Wise installation software.

I recommend upgrading to 3.6 for many many reasons.

Let me know if I can assist further.
