1. Is there already an ETA for the 6th edition of "The Clements Checklist of Birds of the World." updates? BirdBase already beat you to it
2. When do you plan to have the program working properly with Vista? Meaning not to have to disable UAC or having the run the program as administrator after installation?

Hi Rob,
1. It was just released to me last week. We are doing sanity-checks on the data. SteveO has already found numerous errors that we will fix before releasing as a BD tax list.
2. v3.7. Later this fall is the best date/time I can give you.

I'm sorry. I did not know it was a race. But then again, my daddy always said "If you want it bad, that is how you will get it."
Jeff could have released the 6th edition already, but I have too much work and too many sightings to want to run that risk. I have found some discrepancies that I want to get fixed (or clarified) before we release it.
As an example, the new Clements carries the same Scientific name for the Bridled Titmouse and Black-Crested Titmouse.
It also appears that several changes that Jim Clements made in the last few years were undone in the 6th edition. I am hoping to get clarification as to whether that was intentional or accidental. These and other anomalies are being reported to Cornell. Some are easy to decide - I will probably go with the old scientific name for the Bridled Titmouse. Some are relatively unimportant, e.g. is a subspecies name spelled sclaterii or sclateri? Some - like splits and lumps - are more difficult, so we will make the best decision we can.
What we do not want to do is make a decision that will cause sightings to be recorded/reported against the wrong species. Once I am assured that we will not do that, we will release - unless Jeff gets really impatient with me. |

Steve,
I greatly appreciate your patience and thoroughness in this matter!!! I am always frustrated when small mistakes make it through an editing process, and I'm glad to know that someone is checking all the details before making it available. Is Cornell being responsive about it?
Thanks,
Nick |

Hi Steve:
I just received (today!) a hard cover copy of Clement's 6th Checklist. Looking in the book I see Bridled Titmouse is listed as Baeolophus wollweberi and Black-crested Titmouse as Baeolophus atricristatus.
I'm not sure if the hard copy is any better, but I'd be happy to look up anything for you while you wait to hear from Cornell.

Rob,
Thanks for the note, and the offer. I forwarded your note to Cornell, and asked them to check the process used to create the version that they sent to Jeff.
How many times does Stiles' Tapaculo appear in your hardcopy? It appears twice in the version Jeff received. |

I agree, better to wait and fix the issues than releasing too soon. Was just wondering because I need to decide if it would be worth waiting until v6 before buying another license.

I totally agree. In my opinion it is much better to have a clean copy later than a flawed copy soon. Jeff and crew, keep up the excellent work of producing a great product with even greater than excellent support. I'll be waiting.

Hi Steve!
I'm curious what Cornell said about the differences. Did they send you an amended copy?
Thanks!

Hi Rob,
Steve is on vacation this week. Cornell is looking into it. What is clear is that the published version is different from the data they sent us (and others). They are working on an amended version. No time-table yet on when to expect that.

A brief update.
There have been several postings in various fora (forums) about anomalies in the 6th edition of the Clements Checklist. I have reported several to Cornell, and I am apparently not the only one who has done so.
There are many changes that appear to reverse changes previously published by Jim Clements, as well as other questionable changes for which they have not yet published justification and which appear to conflict with other sources.
As a result, I have made some of the changes but have not released it, because I do not want to have to create a significant revision shortly afterward.
The latest note I received from Cornell states that a list of corrections to the 6th edition will be published soon, and that updates will be published twice a year, beginning at the end of September 2007. This represents a change from their previous position, which was that updates would be published once annually in June. I hope that my feedback helped to change the timing.
However, they still state that they will not publish the updates between the 5th and 6th edition - which leaves us to wonder whether any given change was made deliberately or by accident. We can only hope that they will change this statement in the future.
So, don't give up. We have not forgotten. |

Cornell has posted the first of what I believe will be many corrections at http://www.birds.cornell.edu/clement...st/corrections
I will take a look at these (the ones I have not already found and/or reported), and incorporate them into the baseline list I will release. |

OK, it has been 3 months since the initial query.
Please provide an update on the expected release dates for BD 3.7 and Clements 6. Thanks! |
