Whenever I start Birder's Diary, Windows attempts to load Turbo Tax. I get the message "Please while Windows configures Turbo Tax It's Decuctable 2006" It then proceeds to attempt to install the program. When I cancel the installation, it repeats the process several times. I have to cancel the installation many times before it quits.
The same thing is repeated when I attempt to "Add" records to the database. It occurs when I click on "Continue." This does not prevent me from using Birder's Diary, but it is very frustrating.
I do have Turbo Tax It's Decuctable 2006 on my computer already.
How can I prevent this from happening?
I am using BD V 3.6.49. |

Hi:
This usually happens when windows gets its "File Types" table corrupted.
My suggestion is to find out what program is associated with the WAV file extension. BD attempts to play these sound files at the times you mention above and if Turbo Tax is somehow attached to those file types, then that would explain it. To find out:
- Start Windows Explorer
- Click on tools | folder options
- Select the file types TAB
- Scroll down until you see WAV in the list and click on it to select it
- Below the list it will tell you what program is associated with that file extension; mine is Windows Media Player, for example - and that is a valid choice. Let me know what yours says. If it isn't something valid for a sound file (e.g. Turbo Tax) you can change it to a program which can play sound files.
Let me know please,
Jeff |

Mine also says "windows Media Player."
Any other suggestions?

Jeff,
My problem is not Turbo Tax but a statistical program call SPSS loading. I get the opening screen with the Warbling Vireo singing. My file extensions appear to be okay. Any suggestions?

Hmmm - that is strange.
Can either of you isolate exactly when Turbo Tax (or SPSS) attempt to start? Is it when you start BD only or does it happen sometime during the use of BD?
If it is during the startup of BD - please attempt to isolate exactly when this occurs; e.g. before the Splash screen, after the Warbling Vireo sings, after the splash screen but before the main screen shows, etc etc.
This will help me figure out what might be causing this.
Thanks, Jeff |

I get the opening screen with the warbling vireo singing. As soon as the warbling vireo stops, Turbo Tax begins attempting to install. It attempts to install three times at this point.
There are two other situations when it attempts to install. 1) When I click on "View/Edit" it immediately begins to install, and 2) When I click "Add" and then "Continue". I have to click on "Continue before the Turbo Tax begins to install. In both of these situations, it attempts to it attempts to install three times.
If it attempts to install when I click on "View/Edit", it will not install after I click "Add" and then"Continue". Also, If I click "Add" then "Continue" first, it will not install when I then click on "View/Edit".
After attempting to install after the warbling vireo and one other time (either after "View/Edit" or after "Add" and then "Continue", it will not do it again until I restart Birder's Diary.
So, it attempts to install a total of two times and not more. But each of those two times, I have to go through three attempts at installation. After that I'm home free.
I hope this is clear enough.

Hi Jeff,
Very good and detailed information. Thanks much. However, I haven't a clue as to why this is happening. It is some messed-up situation with Windows or Turbo Tax.
I am trying to think what is common about "Add/Continue", "View/Edit" and startup that could possibly trigger something like this - I just don't see anything.
I wonder if Roland is having the same issue with SPSS at the same points. Let's see if he responds.

Jeff: in doing a google search on this< i ame across something which *might* be related in some way:
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=44166
This user was having a problem with TT It's Deductible trying to install itself every time he ran some flight simulator program. It might shed a little light on what's happening, or maybe not. |

Hi Kevin,
Oddly enough, in that thread the original author found the problem, but I'll be darned if I can discern the fix from his text:
Got the little b***tard guys! Was a hive key buried way down in ...Microsoft/current version/installer. Reminded me to use the find function in the registry....duh! Turning off restore didn't do it, surprisingly enough. The key must've like cross-pollinated with the OFF initializer when starting up.
Suffice to say, it is ill-behaved (in this case Turbo-tax) software and Microsoft OS which is causing the problem. I am still not any closer to helping someone resolve this issue.

What it sounded like to me, from the posting, was that there were some leftover registry keys that somehow got activated when he'd try to run this simulator program. My guess is that whatever compiler was used added some sort of background "look in the registry for pending install something-or-other" function, and when it detected a registry entry in the right spot, it tried to run whatever install routine was specified. But that's just a guess, and how it applies to BD I'm not sure. Maybe something in the "Look to see if this is the current version?" function is hitting some odd registry key?
Given the two wildly different programs that are starting up (SASS and TTID), perhaps looking for some odd registry key on each system where the key name is the name, but with those program values in each place, might lead you to which key is being activated. In turn, that might tell you where to look in the BD code (or elsewhere: it could be something the compiler's adding in without you realizing it). |

Well, In my case it is trying to start pdfTextReader.msi but cannot locate it.
I installed that software a while ago, but then removed it - but something seems to have gone wrong.
I cannot reinstall it because it thinks an installation is in progress. (can't repair or delete it for the same reason)
And every time I bring up BD, I have to click cancel twice because it wants to install pdfTextReader. Annoying, but not enough for me to spend more than the couple hours I have already wasted trying to determine the cause. |

Hi Steve,
You are in a unique position. Does this happen when in the VB IDE? If so...?

I had never noticed before. It comes up immediately with the Visual Studio splash screen, long before I select a VB project.
I'm still trying to figure out what that means - but I think that means the problem is not specifically BD related. |

In addition to coming up when the IDE starts, I also get the error form when I start BD under IDE. It occurs after (or while) executing BD_Main.Main instruction Load lMainForm, before executing Private Sub MDIForm_Load().
The actual error form is shown below.
And - I still can't figure it out. |

Jeff,
Sorry about the delay. Immediately after the Warbling Vireo sings (not to be confused with the fat lady), Window Installer launches to install this SPSS program. A click on cancel is usually enough to solve the problem.

For what it's worth, I deleted the "It's Decuctable" folder from the C: Programs folder and did get Turbo Tax "It's Decuctable" program trying to run up with BD. I retored the "It's Decuctable" folder back to Programs folder and the problem ceased. The folder in question was created in 2004 and had only the following file...ID2004DB.mdb.....
There were also 2005 and 2006 "It's Decuctable" folders which I did not mess with.
