Hi Jeff:
I run Vista and reactivated BD 3.649 this morning after a meltdown several weeks ago. When I click the "Add" icon, I get the "Run-time error 13, Type mismatch" message and when I click "OK", it shuts BD down. I deleted the "frmSightingsEntrySetup...." keys from the Registry per previous forum posts. That didn't fix it so I deleted the "frmSightingsEntryText...." keys (maybe I shouldn't have done that) and that didn't work either. What do I need to do now to be able to add sightings.

Hi Bill,
The first should have worked. No problem with the second. It is just remembering previous settings.
Are you sure you deleted all "frmSightingsEntrySetup*" keys in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Birders Diary\Settings"? I have never seen that fail to fix the problem.
Does this happen after you click the "Add" icon and before the Entry Setup window comes up?
Please Exit BD, and recheck to make sure you have deleted all the above keys.
Let me know please, Jeff |

Hi Jeff,
I have confirmed that all "frmSightingsEntrySetup" keys have been deleted from "HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/BirdersDiary/Settings". The Error Window comes up when I click the "Add" icon, no Entry Setup window comes up.
This happened when I purchased the Upgrade last year but then it stopped happening by itself. Should I download a fresh copy to the C: drive rather than "Programs" as I have seen suggested on the Forum?
Thanks,
Bill |

Yes Bill, please download and install to the C: drive (C:\Birder's Diary) and move a copy of your database into that directory (from "c:\program files\birder's diary\data\database.mdb" to "c:\birder's diary\data\database.mdb").
See if that fixes it. If not, then you will want to delete everything from the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/BirdersDiary/Settings location in Regedit and see if that helps. Else, I will need to get onto your system and have a look.
Please let me know, Jeff |

Hi Jeff',
I am travelling and did not have time to deal with the Vista roadblocks to installing to the C: Drive, therefore, I followed your second suggestion and deleted everything from the HKEY_CURRENT_USERS/Software/BirdersDiary/Settings location in Regedit. I am now able to add my sightings to the database.
Thanks,
Bill |

Great. Thanks for the update Bill. Sorry for the issue. I haven't figured out what Vista thinks is wrong. In fact, I have figured out that the same setting is ok after clearing these values and Vista doesn't mind it anymore until some time in the future when it goes awry again.
All you lost by deleting those registry keys were the history settings for windows etc in BD. It will reset them on your next use.

I also have this problem - started today 1/12/2007. I can see that I need to go into the registry and find the link quoted. Unfortunatley I'm not as computer savvy as others on the forum and do not know how to find this. Can you help?

I don’t have Vista, and I have never had this problem, but I can walk you through what I would do to fix it. If the level of detail is wrong in my instructions, please try to fill in the missing steps or ignore the ones you already know. If there is a problem, please ask for clarification.
The first decision you need to make is if you will help us debug the problem. If not, the solution is relatively short and easy. If you will help us, it is still easy, but will take longer. If you help us, you will have my undying gratitude – which is worth about sixpence.
On my machine, I click “START” and then click “Run” on the start form In the text box, type “regedit” In the Regedit tree, expand (Click on the plus sigen in front of) the “HKEY_CURRENT_USER” node Expand the “Software” node Expand the “Birders Dairy” node – If there are two, pick the one with a space between “Birders” and “Diary” Open (click on) the “Settings” folder Scroll down till you see the frst line that starts “frmSightingsEntrySetup” If you want to help us debug the poblem, go to the step labeled “Begin DEBUG” below – otherwise start at the next step Begin NO Debug instructions: Click on the first entry that starts “frmSightingsEntrySetup” Scroll down, hold down the shift key, and click on the last entry that starts “frmSightingsEntrySetup”. That should highlight several entries (on my machine, about 15 lines) Position the mouse over the highlighted entries, and RIGHT click Select “delete”, and confirm delete. exit Registry Editor (click the upper right “X”, Open Birder’s Diary and try it again. Let us know what happened end NO Debug Begin DEBUG Examine the various entries that start “frmSightingsEntrySetup” (I have 15 of them) The specific values may not be critical, but we would like to know what they are – or if you have any additional names that I do not. We also want to know on your system if the last part of the names are separated from the “frmSightingsEntrySetup” by a “.” (period or dot) or an “_” (underscore).. Jeff – I think the “dot” separator may be the key – almost all the other forms use an underscore. My names, types and data are : cboChecklistSort REG_DWORD 0 (just the value in parenthesis – the whole thing is 0x00000000(0) chkHighlightLocation REG_DWORD 0 chkShowSubspecies REG_DWORD 1 chkSightings REG_DWORD 0 chkVoiceRecognition REG_DWORD 0 Left REG_SZ 75 lstTaxa REG_SZ optChecklistEntry REG_SZ False optChecklistStyle0 REG_SZ True optChecklistStyle1 REG_SZ False optChecklistStyle2 REG_SZ False optTextEntry REG_SZ True ssdbcLocation REG_SZ Top REG_SZ 195 WindowState REG_DWORD 0 Please copy the previous lines to paste it into a response to this note, and modify it to show what your registry contains If you have more names, please let us know. If you have different types, let us know. For different values, the one that I suspect the most is WindowState. If it is not set to zero, please right-click it in Register edit, set it to zero, click ok, restart BD and give it a try. Please let us know if that makes a difference, and you can use BD without the error Otherwise, after you have posted what your current registry name, types and data are, please wait for us to respond, We romise it will not take too long. End DEBUG
Either way, please keep us informed of whether it is working!

I'll try and co-operate. Guess I'll be able to hack into Fort Knox once I've been through this! Please excuse any fundamental errors below - I haven't got a clue what I'm doing!
Here's what I get when I follow your DeBug instructions:
cboChecklistSort REG_DWORD 0
chkHighlightLocation REG_DWORD 0
chkShowSubspecies REG_DWORD 0
chkSightings REG_DWORD 0
chkVoiceRecognition REG_DWORD 0
Left REG_SZ 20
lstTaxa REG_SZ
optChecklistEntry REG_SZ True
optChecklistStyle0 REG_SZ True
optChecklistStyle1 REG_SZ False
optChecklistStyle2 REG_SZ False
optTextEntry REG_SZ False
ssdbcLocation REG_SZ AUSTRALIA
Top REG_SZ 200
WindowState REG_DWORD 0
Hope this helps. I've not tried the fix yet. I'll wait for you to come back.
Tx for the prompt response.
John

John,
Unfortunately, the only thing that we have managed to do is blow my pet theory about the cause of the probem.
Please tell me if the registry entries for frmSightingsEntrySetup show up with a "." (dot/period) between the first and last names - unlike the entries for frmSightingsEntryChecklist which use a "_" (underscore) character.
I have already started to develop a new theory, but in the meantime, my advice is to go back into the Registry Editor and follow the NO Debug instructions to delete the lines - then try Birder's Diary again.
I am out of short term ideas at this point. If it happens again, we may ask you do delete the lines one-at a time, trying Birder's Diary after each one, but that sounds like a lot of work. It might tell us which one is the problem, but the problem may lie somewhere else.
Thanks for your help. |

Yes - I see the dot rather than the underscore. Let me know if you sort it out. I'm off to try the No Debug. I'll let you know if iot doesn't nwork.

Steve - did the noDebug routine and still get the error?! Have checked and everything seems to be deleted that should be deleted. Have rebooted and tried running as administrator - no joy......?
Have you got a plan B?

Unfortunately, I don't have a plan B
In a posting in this thread dated 10/22/2007 9:41 PM, Jeff's Plan B was please download and install to the C: drive (C:\Birder's Diary) and move a copy of your database into that directory (from "c:\program files\birder's diary\data\database.mdb" to "c:\birder's diary\data\database.mdb").
See if that fixes it. If not, then you will want to delete everything from the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/BirdersDiary/Settings location in Regedit and see if that helps. Else, I will need to get onto your system and have a look. You could either try that or wait till he catches up with this thread tomorrow.
Sorry I could not figure it out. |

Thanks.
Because I am on Vista I already took note of Jeff's comments and loaded BD into C\:Birder's Diary not C:\ Program Files. I'm away on business now for a couple of days and don't want to rush this so I'll see what Jeff's comments are before I embark....
Thanks for all your help.

Sorry for my absence on this. Been sick.
Ok - a few notes on this topic:
- the underscore always separates the form name from the left, top, width and height values in the registery.
- the period separates the form name from the control settings for the controls on the form.
- The problem is not the period vs the underscore
- The problem is that Vista variably does not like the data type stored in the registery for a given key. This varies from run to run and is not always the same key! That's the frustrating part. Vista just decides, what seems to be randomly, which time and which key it doesn't like. Just to illustrate, I got onto a customer's system one time, and it failed on key 1 and did not have a problem with key 2. When I deleted all such keys, it worked fine, and later failed on key 2 with the very same value it liked the first time! So - yes - Weird.
- Also, the solution that has worked 100% of the time is to delete all the key values associated with the window causing the error. What we did not establish in this situation (and what we seemed to have assumed to be the Sightings Entry Setup window) was, which window is causing the RTE 13 in John's situation? This is usually either the View/Edit Setup window or the Sightings Entry Setup window.
John, since deleting all the "frmSightingsEntrySetup*" keys in the Registry did not solve your problem - I can reasonably assume that our initial assumption was incorrect and that you are getting RTE 13 from the View/Edit Sightings Setup window. Is this correct? If so, then you need to go back to the registry - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Birders Diary\Settings - and delete all of the "frmSightingsViewFilter2*" keys.
Let us know when you get a chance. Thanks Steve for all your help on this one.

It's still the Add entry window that causes the crash. View/Edit works Ok. I have will not delete anything further until you come back on this one.
