I think what I'm trying to say is that B. anthracinus gundlachii is a different thing than B. gundlachii and therefore have their own locations which coincidentally will be the same.

Hi Al:

The defniition of thing in BD is basically the same definition used for subspecies or race in taxonomic terms. Or, in otherwords, referring to the same regularly inter-breeding population of birds (or other group of animals/plants/etc).

In this case, Al, you are saying that the AOU's B. gundlachii is different than Clements' B. a. gundlachii. That is news to me. I was under the impression that the two referred to the same group of regularly inter-breeding population of birds.

If so, then we want those that group (under AOU and Clements) to refer to the same internal BD thing so that when user logs a sighting against Clements' B. a. gundlachii that it will also show up as a sighting for AOU's B. gundlachii.

If they do not refer to the same group of birds, then please let me know how AOU is differening from Clements in definition.

Thanks Al...

Jeff

Yes, that is what I am saying at least internally to BD. If that'a a problem for BD, then maybe it can't be done.

I got to thinking some more about this and remembered that the Green-winged Teal has a similar split up in that you have a thing for Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca) and another for Green-winged Teal (Superspecies). The superspecies consists of (A.c.crecca and A.c.carolinensis). The output is Green-winged Teal for ABA or AOU in appropiate locations and Eurasian Teal and Green-winged Teal in BOU and Clements in appropriate locations. For example in California where both occur, BD ABA and AOU tax lists show only the Green-winged Teal but if using BD BOU or Clements both Eurasian and Green-winged Teal are listed as full species.

Does this method apply to the Common and Cuban Black-hawks as well.

Hi Al,

Yes - this problem pops up in a few troublesome species. But only a few out of 10k species and 21k subspecies in the world.

Happy Holidays, all. Do you have a time line on the fix for Herring Gull missing from the 2007 ABA North America upgrade? I just went to enter a sighting of Herring Gull for Michigan and it was not there so went back and used the 2006 ABA list.

Thanks.

Yes Todd. The one on the Downloads page now has been corrected.

Do the following:

  1. delete the current tax list using the Tax View window in BD
  2. Download and import the current ABA 2007 tax and checklist files.
Use the instructions on the Downloads :: Tax List Instructions page.

That is it in a nutshell. But let me know if you require assistance.

Hi Jeff. I deleted the old 2007 tax list as per instruction 1, downloaded and unzipped the corrected ABA 2007 tax list, as per instruction 2, but when I went to import it into BD a message came up that said "This file is not recognized as a Birder's Diary Import file for [Taxonomy]!

Any suggestions?

Todd

Hi Todd,

See "Downloads :: Tax List Instructions" page on this site for unzipping the download files.

This error has one of two causes 99% of the time:

1. You are using the checklist TAB on the Import window to import a taxonomy file or vice versa. Be sure you are using the correct TAB on the import window for the file you are importing.
2. You opened the CSV file inside the ZIP file with Excel. Unzip the file again and extract straight to disk - DO NOT OPEN with EXCEL.

let me know please,
Jeff
