Hi Jeff,

I just installed Adobe Photoshop CE3 and now when I click on the BD v3.6 desktop icon, I get Run-time error '13' Type mismatch on startup.

Should I follow the instructions in the thread started by grahambtg@aol.com in October 2007 or is this a different issue, since it is not being caused by a Sightings entry window?

(The BD v3.6 was running for weeks on Vista without any issues, even though I have been doing extensive work on building new taxonomy lists and checklists.)

Pete

Hi Pete,

I would like to have a look at this please. Can you let me know when you will be home next in order to let me onto your system?

Jeff

fyi - I got onto Pete's Vista system and deleted the bottom half of all registry settings under ...\Birder's Diary\ - and that fixed it.

Could you please tell me more about how to do this as I am still having the same problem. "BDV36 / Run-time error '13' / Type mismatch" on startup, the program then quits. I tried the things Jeff told me earlier but I continue to have the same problem.

The machine I am using is a Dell 64 bit Vista machine.

Hi Roger,

When - exactly - does this error occur? Above you mention on Startup. Do you mean before BD comes up and you are able to use anything? Or, does this only occur when, for example, you click the ADD button?

thanks,

Jeff

The small startup window appears then the error message appears followed by the program shutting down.

Sorry, I was away from the computer. I will leave the computer on and you can get in whenever you want. Thanks, Roger

Hi Roger,

It doesn't work that way. You have to be present to run a small program that lets me onto your computer. So - both you and I have to be present to initiate the connection.

What about some time tonight or tomorrow?

Jeff

Hi Roger,

Just had another customer with the same problem. This came about, I believe because they upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista or XP, and then they attempted to return to Vista or XP. Either way, it left the computer is a weird state.

I finally fixed the problem via these steps:

  1. Open the Registry Editor
    1. click on the Windows Start button and type "regedit" into the search field
    2. This will open the registry Editor
  2. Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Birders Diary
  3. Open that branch and you will see the Settings node underneath it.
  4. Right-click on the Settings node and choose "Delete"
  5. Attempt to start BD again.

Let me know. I don't know why the OS considers opening that key a "Data type mismatch", however, it was on attempting to open that key that it reported the error on the other customer's system. Once I deleted that node, and all under it via the process above, BD started normally and recreated the contents of that node.

Hi Jeff,

I did just what you said and BD works perfectly now. Thanks, your support is the best. I have more time to go birding now so I am planning on entering all of my sightings now. I am glad to see you have written an eBird connection also as plan on using that to participate in that program.

Thanks again.

Fantastic! Took me a couple hours to figure that one out.

Have fun.
