Hi Jeff,

Downloaded 3.6 yesterday, upgraded successfully as far as I can tell.

Interestingly, after purchasing the $39 upgrade online to authorize 3.6 from 3.5, which went fine... Question 1 is: when I went to do a REPORT... my main home desktop PC gave error that my Clements World 2005 taxonomy was NOT licensed??  So I went back online and entered my numerical code from when I ordered it months ago (it used to work fine on this PC with v3.5)... and it after communicating with your server, it then said "OK".  Fine.

Same thing happened for when I tried to run my ABA-area reports too.  Did the same procedure, entered its unique number, and re-connected to your server, and then all "OK".  Fine.  Desktop PC upgrade seemed to go all ok, even though I had to re-authorize my tax lists.  Oh well... at least I had counts left to do it.

Then went to upgrade my laptop PC.  Upgrade worked fine, got 3.6 running no issues.  I expected to have the same issue with the 'unauthorised taxonomy lists' as on desktop PC, but for some reason, it worked fine!?  I cant figure that out, but all seemed well on both PCs.

Today, I happened to notice something wrong.  I am missing my "Yellow Warbler" (Dendroica petechia) from my ABA lifelist... using 'Birds - ABA -North America - 11-2005' tax list. ????????

Yet it is correctly showing up on my WORLD lifelist... which uses 'Birds - Clements - World - 2005'  taxonomy.

When I look at  VIEW/SIGHTINGS  with everything selected, my yellow warbler sightings do show up, with several entries, in several USA states.

SO I AM WONDERING WHY WHY do these sightings entries NOT showing up in my ABA lifelist ?

I just now ran a REPORT SIGHTINGS, using ABA tax, and I notice my yellow warblers are missing from there too, so for some reason they are not being seen when using this tax.

Running it with Clements 2005, they do show up as expected.

WHAT HAPPENED?

HOW TO FIX IT?

And more concerning is... since I just happened to stumble onto this... WHAT ELSE MIGHT BE MISSING now????????

Confused in California,

Dave

Weird. I have never heard of that happening before. Over 200 users have updated to 3.6 since Tuesday without reporting this problem. You did the right thing to correct it. Let me know if it happens again.

I would have re-allocated your counts no problem.

Hi Dave,

What the ABA considers the Yellow Warbler and what Clements considers the Yellow Warbler are two different things. You can investigate this relationship using the Rosetta Stone feature in Diary.

You will see in the screen captures below that Clements Yellow Warbler points to a different internal thing than the ABA's.

Clements' considers the American Yellow Warbler a subspecies - D. p. aestiva. That is what the ABA's Yellow Warbler points to in the Clements list.

To correct this issue - you should do the following:

1. Click View/Edit
2. Clear all fields
3. Select Only the Clements taxonomic list
4. Enter a taxonomic filter of "Animalia Chordata Aves Passeriformes Parulidae Dendroica petechia [this will select all of your Yellow Warbler sightings according to Clements]
5. Click continue

You will be presented with the View/Edit window.

Assuming all of your yellow warbler sightings are in the US,

6. then you will want to select them all and click Edit
7. In the Edit window select the checkbox next to the Name field [this says that you will be updating that field only]
8. Enter "Dendroica petechia aestiva" into the name field and click Update [see bottom screen capture below]

This will update all of your yellow warbler sightings to D. p. aestiva according to Clements, and D. petechia according to the ABA list.

Let me know if this is not as clear as it should be. What Diary does for you is match birds/things from one tax list to another automatically behind the scenes. What you apparently did, was to enter USA sightings for yellow warbler using the Clements tax list without knowing that Clements D. p. aestiva is the bird you are seeing in the USA. And that the ABA tax list does not have a pointer to that superspecies.

Jeff

Jeff,

THANK YOU as always for your fast and thorough and complete response!

I've corrected the SIGHTINGS, and all seems ok now, both for ABA and Clements.

Not sure why I had the non-authorised tax lists... but its working now so thats all that matters.

Thanks again for a wonderful program.

best
Dave

Hi Jeff,

This same above problem is still affecting my desktop home system.  It's as if when I upgraded to 3.6 from 3.5, all my stored licenses were wiped out.  Today, I wanted to simply EXPORT some sightings, and I couldnt do it!  Because thats an "advanced" feature!  So I entered my upgrade from 3.5 to 3.6 numerical code, and it says nooo... you need to first get an advanced license.

So I found my original numeric code for upgrading to 3.5 from 3.0, and tried that... and I got the dreaded... no more authorizations left .. message.  SOoo frustrating............

Can you please bump my counts up a few I guess.. and I try again.

I wonder what happened during the upgrade to 3.6???

anyway, thanks and pls add some to my authorisations so I can get this done.

thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

The only reason I know that this happens is when the computer in question has a change in configuration (e.g. added/removed disk drive, USB device, ZIP drive, memory stick, etc.). Has any of this occurred on your system? Are you regularly adding/removing devices on this computer? One customer had this problem and found that it was a virus that was causing it. Once the virus was cleaned off the system, the problem went away.

I have reset all of your license activation counts.

If this happens again, see if you can notice an event that occurs between it working and not working.

Also, after you get it working, exit and restart BD just to make sure that it keeps over the immediate duration.

Very sorry for this. You and only one other customer (out of 5000+) currently have this issue.

thanks for your response on Sunday... I was so happy to receive your reply.

However.......... it seems nothing is easy with this...........

Now, I get this message:

'You have attempted to register a License which is only meant to upgrade an existing 3.x version to 3.5. The application has determined that you do not have a licensed version of 3.x prior to 3.5" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff, I am ready to give up.
I have so many different numerical license IDs.
I have the one I just tried which was the original upgrade to 3.5 from 3.0.x

Then I also have the numerical license ID to upgrade from 3.5 to 3.6

And of course all the license IDs for all the various needed taxonomies, which i have also entered.

It seems now I am totally stuck. I have no more IDs to try!

It seems the problem is all I have ever done is UPGRADE all the time, and it now is asking for years old original BD v 3 CD installation.... and I sure as heck DONT WANT TO GO WAY BACK THERE AND DO THAT!

I am running v 3.6.12 currently.

Yes, I did take down my PC a month ago for a few days and totally reconfigured the drives (I have 6 hard drives) and memory and hi speed USB ports and Firewire ports, since I am also doing digital video production using Adobe Premier Pro.

PLEASE MAKE THIS BD experience a good ending. I am so frustrated with this thing not being authorised seemingly every time I upgrade something on BD or get a new upgraded taxonomy.......and I am 100% legal and really did pay for everything all this time.

thanks Dave

Hi Dave,

Very sorry for all the trouble. I know you are 100% legal. That is not an issue.

Certainly the change in hard drives has caused this problem. No problem to get it fixed.

Re-applying the "3.0 to 3.5 upgrade" license does a check to see if you have 3.0 on your system. The complexities in this arose due to the sale of BD to me in 01/05 and the change in accounting/online-store details.

Please do this:

1. Start 3.6
2. Click on "Help | License Info"
3. Click on "Unlock by Email"
4. Reply with the two "user codes" on that window
5. I will reply with the two reg key codes that you enter on that window
6. Click Ok
7. Click on "Unlock Now"
8. Enter your "Upgrade to 3.6 from 3.5" License ID and password
9. Click Ok
10. See if your Clements and ABA 2005 taxonomic lists are listed in the "Activated Products window"; if not, repeat steps 7-9 once for each of those licenses.

This will take care of it - promise. And please know, that I will never leave a customer hanging. Just so sorry that you had to go through this frustration.

nothing is going right for me.

I am beyond frustrated.

I tried your reply. I get the message, "RegKey1 was not entered correctly. Please try again."

I tried it 3 different times.

Hi Dave,

I am confused - you were supposed to reply to this thread with the two user codes on the Unlock by Email window. See picture below.

When I get your two user codes back here, then I will reply to you again with the two reg key codes that you enter in the empty fields on that window.

Let me know where we are miscommunicating,
Jeff

Jeff,
THANK YOU. SUCCESS!

All seems to be working again.

Q: will this happen again if I make a system config change? btw, I have scanned with latest Norton Antivirus, and my system was clean and still is clean, using latest definitions. So just curious.

thanks again for all your help.

Yes - if you have a major config change, the licensing software (3rd party) will thing that you are attempting to run it on a different machine and go back to demo mode.

However, the fix really does only take a few seconds of re-entering your License IDs. In your case, you have to get the upgrade to 3.5 codes from me.
