Hi Jeff--
A problem suddenly developed today with one of the "comments" windows. Here it is--
I've double-clicked a sighting in the "View & Edit Sightings" window to bring up the "Edit Sightings" window for the sighting concerned. I then click "comments" (in order to expand the comments field) and everything freezes except the "Exit" button which functions normally. As the program shuts down, I get a fleeting glimpse of a small open (but not fully expanded) window on the lower left of the screen.

I had a similar problem in 7/06 (BD3.5.56) which was eventually solved when I found & closed the small phantom window by fiddling around with the scroll bars.. But this time, try as I might,  I haven't been able to get at the window. I've moved and partially minimized various of the other windows hoping to find it underneath one of them, but no soap. So what do I do now? Is there some other way of dealing with the problem?

As far I can remember, I didn't do anything unusual to cause the problem. I use the program on an almost daily basis and until today it's been working absolutely flawlessly for well over a year now (and that's, of course, why you haven't been hearing from me much recently).

Hi Fred,

This has to be a registry setting. You can either delete all of the Diary registry settings - you will just lose your personalized window locations and sizes, or play around with deleting one (or a set) at a time to see if that clears the problem up.

  1. Open the Registry Editor
    1. Click on the Windows Start button (lower left of screen)
    2. Click on the RUN item in the Start menu
    3. Type "regedit" in the Open field and click OK; this will bring up the registry editor
  2. Browse to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Birders Diary\Settings"
  3. Delete one, some or all of the name/value pairs on the right.

I have high confidence that this will fix it. If you have the patience to do one at a time and then test Diary, we will know which one it was. Otherwise, delete them all.

Please let me know,

Jeff

Actually Fred. Better idea.

First, just try changing all "anything_WindowState" whose value is not "0" (zero), to zero. See screen shot below.

I think that will fix your problem. If not, then follow instructions above.

Hi Jeff--
Your "better idea" worked. There were 8 or 10 "WindowStates" whose value was 1 or 2. I changed them all to 0 as per your suggestion and now I'm back in business. Many thanks for your prompt response--I'll be hitting the southern Nevada migrant traps in a day or 2 and I'm very pleased to have BD up and running again.

Thanks for the update Fred. Any chance you made a list of the 8 or 10 values that you had to change?

I don't know what gets one of those into a messed-up state, but if we had the list, maybe I could narrow it down.

Anyway - have a good birding trip in NV. I am heading to Peru for 2 weeks!

No, I don't have a list unfortunately. I started to make one, but gave up when I saw how many there were. I wish I had known that a list would have been useful to you. Anywhere, here are the 3 I did write down:
frm CommentEdit.
frm Main
frm ReportPreview2

This may also be of interest (or maybe not, but here it is anyway). I just noticed that the registry changes seem to have had another effect.  Before the changes, the screen would go completely white for a short while in the middle of the backup process, slowing it down a little. This had been happening for about a year, ever since I installed a new mouse which I assumed probably had something to do with it. But now, after the registry changes, the white screen no longer appears and backup is a little faster than before.

All the best.  Have a good time in Peru.
Fred

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the info. I am not going to touch that one with a 10 ft stick however. No idea what that is about.

Take care,
Jeff
