I set up a report in Life Lists for all birds I have seen in California.  The preview looked good and attempted to print a report.  The window next to the Output button displays the word print.  When I click on the Output button, nothing happens.  I don't have problems printing in other programs on my computer.  What is wrong?

I am using version 3.6. What version are you using?

To the left of the Output button, I have a dropdown box. The choices are:
Printer, Printer File, 3 different HTML, PDF, Text, RTF and E-mail.

Do you have the same choices? Your note said Print, which is not one of my choices.

Regards,
Steve

I am using version 3.6.  Yes, I have those choices in the drop down box to the left of the output button.  You are correct.  The choice is printer, which I selected.

HI Karen,

Just to be sure...

1. You select "Printer" from the dropdown (not "Print file")
2. Then you click the Output button.

After that you should get the standard Windows print dialog.

If you do not see it, see if it is hidden behind some other window.

Thanks,

Jeff

I make sure I choose Printer, then hit the Output button.  Nothing.  I minimized all Birder's Diary windows, leaving a wide open Desktop.  Still nothing.  I checked my 3 printers in Control Panel.  None had a print job waiting.  The command to print doesn't seem to be reaching Windows Vista.

HI Karen,

I think it is time for me to have a look at your system. Would you be available this evening from 6-9pm MDT?

Please pick a time there and respond here.

Thanks,
Jeff

Karen has an HP computer; 64-bit machine (most machines are 32-bit) with an HP printer.

This print issue is a known problem with HP printer drivers on 64-bit machines. HP should have a fix or update to this problem on their web site.

In the meantime, Karen - and others with such a setup - can output their reports to PDF format, then open the PDF file and print from there.

fyi

Jeff

My problem is similar to Karen's except that "output" gets me to a "save as" screen. When saved, the file is something that I cannot open. I am able to save as a pdf and then can print, but that seems awkward and I have been previously able to print directly.

I am using Windows SP, BD 3.6, HP 1020 (ran Driver Detective and got no hits on 1020).

Hello Beatrice,

If you are getting a "save as" screen, then it sounds as if your have something other than "printer" selected in your 'output' dropdown. Make sure printer is selected in that dropdown and tell me what happens then.

You can save to PDF and then open and print from there. That is good.

You say previously used to be able to print directly. What happened between when it used to work and now that it does not?

You are on Windows XP (you say "SP" above) I assume. If so, then that should be 32-bit and this would not be the problem. Let me know if this is not correct.

You also say that "when saved, the file is something you cannot open". What is selected in the "Output" dropdown when you do this?

Let's start here. Please answer all the questions above and let me know.

Thanks

Jeff

p.s. this is exactly 3 years to the day from the last post on this thread... Ooooohhh
