I am purchasing a new computer with a dual core 64 bit microprocessor. The HP web site recommends contacting software providers to determine if the software is compatable with the 64 bit system. Is it? I will also be going from XP to Vista which is another can of worms but there have been many helpful forum entries that should get me through it.
Thanks
Gary |

Hi Gary,
Glad you asked. No problem with Vista - but HP's 64-bit machines do not work with BD's licensing software. Therefore, we cannot get BD to activate on this machine.
This is the only hardware/manufacturer that I am aware of that BD has a problem with.
Let me know if I can assist further,
Jeff |

Jeff, Thanks for keeping me out of trouble. I assume the 32 bit HP is OK? Gary |

Yes Gary. The HP 64-bit, IMHO, will cause you much trouble with many apps. But the 32 bit machine - of which I have 2 - have no problems.

| One final question. The HP operating system I'm considering is 32 bit Vista, the processor is 64 bit AMD backword compatable to 32 bit. I believe the operating system governs program compatability and this configuration should work with Birders Diary 3.6. Am I correct or does both the operating system and the processor need to be 32 bit? |

Hmmmm. I don't know the answer to this one Gary. Anybody have this config to test?
I would be leary of any HP 64-bit machine. But until we can get our hands on one to test - I smply don't know.
Any chance you can get it and return it if it doesn't work?

Jeff, Too many potential problems with the HP. I bought a Dell that still offers XP Professional installed. My 6th Dell but my computer programmer brother-in-law says HP is better. Oh well, thanks for the help. Gary |

Hi Gary,
I use computers from both manufacturers. Too many potential problems with HP's 64-bit machines - but I find their 32-bit machines to be top-notch. Nothing wrong with Dell's either.
Take care,
Jeff |

| A bit late for this dicussion but perhaps useful for others. I am running BD 3.6.49 on a Compaq (HP) with AMD Athlon 64 (X2) Dual Core Processor with Windows Vista. Vista runs in 32-bit mode. So far I have not encountered any issues with BD. |

A bit late for this as well, Jeff, but my understanding is that when a 64-bit processor runs a 32-bit operating system, it switches to a 32-bit mode (so that all the applications see is a 32-bit processor and OS). So as long as the OS is Windows 32-bit, BD should work.
"Theoretically" BD should also work on the 64-bit OS, as well, but there may be a few things in the install process that could break BD from running. I can't imagine any of the "usual" traps that trip up 32-bit developers being an issue in BD (like trying to use a 32-bit driver), but there are several potential pitfalls. It may be as simple as recompiling the BD source code on a 64-bit machine and offering it as a separate download.

Hi Kevin - thanks for the input as well.
The problem actually is the 3rd party Licensing Software add-in I use to perform the licensing stuff. It does not work on 64-bit HP machines!

Jeff,
I have an HP 64-bit machine running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. I want to install my copy of Birder's Diary on it since my previous laptop died a painful death. From this sequence of posts it appears that there is no way I can do that and have your Licensing Software authenticate my instantiation of the software. Is there any kind of binary file you can send me that I can install locally to allow me to keep using BD or must I wait for your software partner to develop a 64-bit licensing application? Do you have any idea when that might be? Thanks.

Hello Terry,
I do not have a solution yet for this. Basically because the 3rd party licensing software has not provided a solution.
However, just to be sure, please go ahead and install BD on your 64-bit machine and test to see if the licensing takes. Please report back on your findings. It only takes a few minutes to install and test this.
And the funny thing is, it only seems to fail on HP's 64-bit machines. No one elses that I know of. That may only be because no customer has tried it and reported it on a non-HP 64-bit machine however.
Let me know please,
Jeff |

Jeff,
I downloaded the BD V 3.5.56 file and installed it. When trying to "Unlock Now", I received an "Upgrade not Licensed!" error message. The software appears to run OK in sample mode.
OBTW: I have an HP Pavilion dv7-1023cl laptop which is otherwise pretty sweet.
Thanks for the fast response.

Hi Terry,
So - this is the 64-bit HP machine running XP-64 - right?
Then it did as we suspected.
Yes - it will continue to run in Demo mode as the licensing part is the only part that is not compatible (apparently) with HP 64-bit machines.
Let us know what happens after the 30-day demo period is over.
