Jeff,

Yes, this is the 64-bit HP machine running XP-64. I'll keep you posted as to what happens with the operation of the BD software next month.

My next challenge is to rescue my data from the old crashed computer's hard drive. If I'm lucky (hah!) I can find an old backup file on my external hard drive. If Murphy did not observe the holidays, I'll have to send the hard drive to a rescue mission to have 50 years of observations copied to a DVD.

Thanks for your continued help,

Terry

Hi Jeff,

Here it is a year later and I'm finally getting around to trying to make BD 3.5.56 run on the HP Pavilion dv7-1023cl laptop referenced above. After the demo period expired, the BD software stopped working. I tried the latest posted instructions for license activation and received a message that the number of authorized activations had been exceeded.

Please advise if you have been able to get the licensing software to work on 64-bit machines like mine, and if so, what I need to do to get things working OK.

OBTW: I never did recover my data from the crashed hard drive but I did find all of my raw data (Sometimes being a packrat has an upside!) So now I have the exciting prospect of re-entering a half-century of observations... wish me luck.

Thanks for your help,

Terry

Hi Terry,

Jeff is on a well-deserved holiday for a few more days. I am sure he will aswer you when he returns.

I could reset your activation count, but we need to make sure it will work.

I tried to go through the posts related to 64-bit HP machines, and am not sure I know the status - If anyone can answer definitively, please do so.

I am sorry that you could not recover your sightings. Did you try any of the companies that specialize in recovering lost data?

I know some folks that have loaded over a hundred thousand sightings into BD, so I know it can be done. I like to frame it as a opportunity to relive the memories of the fun and excitement of going places and seeing birds. A couple good memories per page really makes it a lot more enjoyable.

Good luck!

Regards,
Steve

Steve,

No problem waiting for Jeff to return from vacation; I wasn't expecting a prompt reply since the forum page mentioned he would be gone.

I'm certain I will relive the fun of each new species sighting as I re-enter my data. Even with the streamlined data entry features of BD, it's gonna be a long process. The data rescue services are only affordable if you don't need physical intervention. Once they head toward the clean room the cost meter shifts into overdrive. I can do a lot of fat-finger data entry for what they charge.

Thanks for your response and have a happy holiday season,

Terry R

Hi Terry,

I have reset your license activations. BD works just fine on this computer - how do I know? I have the same one and it works great. In fact, there seems to be no more problems with any HP 64-bit computers and BD.

Please let me know how it goes and if I can assist further.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Hope you enjoyed your holiday vacation. I tried unlocking my copy of BD 3.5 again, this time using the "run as admin" process described on the forum page and I received an "Upgrade not Licensed" message. The ID code I used is the one I received with the purchase of v3.5. I can't find an earlier number in any of my records. I'm not quite sure how to proceed.

Thanks for your continued help,

TR

Hi Terry,

For that license we have to follow a different procedure. This only applies to this old 3.5 upgrade license that you have.

  1. Bring up the License Information window (Help | License Information)
  2. click on Unlock by eMail (or does it say Unlock by Phone)
  3. Send me the two User codes on that window
  4. I will reply with the reg key codes that you enter to activate your user license

Now - with that said - I am having trouble with my license server since being back from vacation. So please give me a day or two to get this straightened out and respond - it may be sooner, but may take a day or two.

thanks

Jeff

p.s. Or you could upgrade to 3.6 now and that license will work immediately. Just wanted to let you know.

Hi Jeff,

I was planning to upgrade during the current sale period, so I'll do that now and report back how all worked out.

Thanks,

TR

Jeff,

The download/install process went flawlessly and all of my new tax lists are also imported and activated. Kudos on the integration of the install/activate tutorial with the install process. I really liked being able to pause the tutorial while I execute a few steps of the process in the application.

The only minor issue I encountered is that I have previously purchased the Trees of NA Tax List but do not have a record of the install password, only the license ID. I have downloaded the file but need a valid password to execute the unzip/install sequence. Any suggestions?

Thanks for all of your help and the continuing improvement of BD. The new features add to the flexibility and convenience.

Best regards,

TR

Hello Terry,

Glad you like the improvements. Question: Don't you have a copy of your old database? If you restore that, it has all of your sightings and all of your taxonomic lists. If not, then please send email to support@birdersdiary.com and I will send you the installation password for Trees of NA.

Jeff,

Unfortunately, the hard drive in my old laptop died in a big way and the data rescue guys want about a kilobuck to recover my data. Thus I'm going to have to re-enter all of my sightings (for the last 40+ years!!!) Fortunately, being an inveterate packrat, I have all of my old paper records, log book pages and Excel spreadsheets. Just think how good I'll be at BD data entry by the time I'm caught up! :-) I'll request the Trees of NA Tax List password via e-mail, as you requested (including my license ID #).

Best regards,

TR

Sent... I look forward to some input on ways to improve data input even further.

Terry--

That's why, although it sounds like overkill, I periodically back up my database from my main desktop computer to several locations: my notebook, a USB stick, the FTP server in my office... I used to burn a CD of the file but the USB stick works better and faster.

Only once did I need to go back to one of those backups, but was I ever glad I did. Not that I have nearly as many sightings to enter as you do, but because for the last few years, I haven't kept paper copies of anything - so the digital is all there is. Hence, redundancy is critical.

Yeah, I got it. I outsmarted myself: I only backed up "My Documents", forgetting where BD stores the database file.

A 16 GB/RAID5 Drobo is on my short list of presents to get for myself. It'll also make a killer music server. I'll still have to remember to back up the hard drive after I've been away from home with the laptop, but it will be a lot simpler than messing with DVDs or sticks.
