I am attempting to install BD v 3.6. The installer assumes (incorrectly in my system) that my boot drive is volume C. My system's boot is in fact volume D. Therefore I get a message that the system cannot find file dao360.dll. The reason it cannot find this file is that it is looking in volume C instead of D. How can I fix this problem so I can install the program? The code should probably ask me to find the file since it cannot find it. That file is located in the proper directory, but on drive D instead of drive C.

Thanks.

Hello Alan,

I am in new territory here. I don't think I have ever encountered this one.

It sounds as if we could just get by the installation issue of dao360, and have it complete the installation, BD would probably run.

What version of Windows are you running? (e.g. XP, Vista, etc)

Are you running on a MAC?

I wonder if all of your environment variables point to the D: drive correctly. For example, open a Windows DOS Command Window and type set followed by the ENTER key.

Is SystemDrive set to D:?
Is SystemRoot set to "D:\windows"?
Is windir set to "D:\windows"?
Is ProgramFiles set to "D:\Program Files"?
What is the value of Path? HomeDrive?

Let's start here please.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I am running XP. When I enter "set" then press enter, I get an error message. Same for all the others. When I type in "regedit" I get the registry editor screen. You are probably on to something. Although I have not had any problems with other programs in this regard. I have had this current system running for about a year now, actually a bit over a year.

How do I set the system drive to D? Etc.?

I am running a raid array - mirror. That is why my boot drive is set to D instead of C.

Hi Alan,

You have to enter the "set" command at the Windows Command Window DOS prompt. See screen shot below.

Raid 1 Array - mirror. Way cool! I just got a 2TB Raid1 Mirror myself - but for backups.

So please let me know the values of everything I mentioned above when you get to run the SET command in a DOS window. Oh - to get a DOS window, type "cmd" in the start => Run window as you did for "regedit".

Jeff

That all looks as I would expect Alan.

I think I found the error. It is in the WISE installation software that creates the installation kit. It has hard-coded "C:" for the DAO installation!!! ARGGGG! Now - how to fix it?

Any way you can get back to a C: drive for your system drive? After reviewing the build software, I am quite certain that this is no trivial task - if at all possible.

Heading to bed for the night. Let me know on your chances of changing your boot drive letter - and I will look into it also.

Sorry for the trouble here.

Hi Jeff,

It's not that I would get "back" to the C as my boot. When I built the machine with the RAID array, it just named the boot drive D. I don't know why it did that. It was something that it did automatically. When I go into Disk Management there is only one drive listed - D - even though there are two drives mirroring each other. Why the system calls that the D drive instead of C is the million dollar question. I'm more than a little wary of renaming my boot drive. I would need to have ironclad assurances that I could do it without screwing everything up before doing it.

I have had that kind of nightmare experience before. Don't really want to go there again if I can help it. Know what I mean?!

Please let me know if you can figure out a solution.

Alan

Alan, Jeff:

This tech note from Microsoft *may* be of some help.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q223188

It describes how to change the drive letter designation of a system/boot drive when the letter has changed without user intervention. It seems to me that it's describing what happened here, but I'd still suggest proceeding with extreme caution.

Thanks Kevin!

Alan - are you willing/wanting to try this?

If not, then I will work on the installation scripts, then upload revisions to you and see if it works for you. This process may take a week or two of going back and forth. fyi

Let me know,

Jeff

UPDATE: I modified the kit and now it installs properly on a system drive other than C:. Note, this is a special build and I have not replaced the current kit. If you have this problem, please let me know and I will give you access to this installation kit altered to work on non-standard system drives.

fyi

Jeff
