Dear Jeff,

Me again and with the same old problem.  When I tried to upgrade my Clements list to the new version (and I don't know why I want to do so as I'm likely to lose about 30 species) all went well until the program required an Internet connection.  In previous releases / upgrades it was possible to click on "register later" or "register by E-mail" and continue but this option is not available.  It looks as though I simply can't run the upgrade unless my PC is connected to the Internet.  And it's not.

Is there any way around this, please?  For a host of reasons that are neither interesting nor relevant I really don't want to connect the PC I use for Birder's Diary to the Internet.  Is there another way to upgrade my Clements list?

Best wishes,

Graham

By the way, you'll notice that my "multi-post" function is still up and running. No clue what's causing it - I can only promise you that I only click once on "Submit" ...

Best wishes,

Graham

Hello Graham,

There are two steps for upgrading your taxonomic list that requre internet connection:

  1. downloading the 2 new taxonomic/checklist files
  2. Activating your new taxonomic license

The second can be done via email and there is an Unlock by Email button on the Help => License Information window that you will want to use. When you get to that step, just post the two user codes form that window here and I will respond with the codes to activate your license.

The first requires an internet connection to some computer in order to download the 2 new files and a new video tutorial file that leads you through the import process. You can perform this process on a computer that is connected to the internet (e.g. the one you use to post here) and then move the files, after the download is complete, to your offline computer running Birder's Diary. Then complete the installation there.

Let me know if I need to clarify any of this further.

Jeff

Dear Jeff,

Thanks, that's really helpful.  What I had done is download the update file (Birds-Clements-2008v632.exe) and take that up to my BD PC, assuming that this contained all I needed to upgrade the list.  From your reply, though, it sounds as though this file is just a program to download the real update files and the famous video tutorial to my PC, allowing them to be run.  I'll run the update file from another PC and carry all the resulting files to my offline PC and let you know how I do.

Thanks again for your help.

Best wishes,

Graham

P.S. Can't use the office PC I'm working on because of our tedious firewall so I can't try it out until I get home.

Dear Jeff,

Thanks again for the help - everything worked fine (except that the checklist data file contains some extremely bizarre things - I guess I should switch to the other forum to comment on this but the idea that if a species occurs somewhere all of its subspecies also do leads to extremely unwiedly lists when "include subspecies" is activated).

My two user codes are:
UC1 304324875
UC2 6537283

Could you please send me the two magic numbers I need to activate the checklist?

Thanks in advance, and best wishes,

Graham

Here you go Graham:

Reg key 1: 667386473
Reg key 2: 1648632113

The checklist issue concerning subspecies containing all locations assigned to their parent species has been there since day one.

The effort of assigning 20k + subspecies locations is too enormous to tackle at this time. However, this has been done for all North American subspecies in the ABA w/subspecies tax list. fyi.

I have been working with Mal Jenkins of http://printablebirdchecklists.homestead.com/

Mal is developing Clements based subsystem level checklists for many countries.

I still owe him (and Jeff) some other stuff. When I get that done I will be converting his checklists (as he creates them) into BD format and making them available.

Regards,
Steve

Dear Jeff, dear Steve,

First of all, thanks vey much for the codes. I'll put them in and see how much my list suffers from all the lumps.

I appreciate the sheer amount of work that would be required to assign locations to all the subspecies in the Clements list. For countries where I birdwatch regularly I have done this - and have posted a couple of the results to the forum - but the number of non-US countries where checklists are available at the subspecific level is still pretty low. My feeling is that there are lots of us around who are editing our own lists and if we make them more widely available, much of the work would be done (as is already the case for the US - but surely BD is widely used outside the States?)

Mal Jenkins' collection is extremely good and the countries I have looked at are pretty accurate (I'll mail him a few corrections for Austria!). If these could form the basis of a new Clements checklist it would be a big help to all of us who do most of our birdwatching outside the US. At present, entering sightings at the subspecific level is most easily done in two stages: entering the species and then poring over HBW and various field guides / monographs. It would be great if BD could do part of the work for us!

Thanks for listening to this rant.

Best wishes,

Graham

Hi Graham,

Agreed. The checklist forum here is for that purpose. To allow users to update areas/countries local and specific to them, and such updates can then go into the greater overall database to be disseminated to all users.

Yes - BD is in use in 29 countries to date!

Thanks,

Jeff
