04/19/2009 11:38 PM Alert

I'm attempting to get BD2eBird working on my XT-Home platform.  It seems to have been successfully downloaded and installed.  But, when I start BD2eBird, I get the following screen:

---------------

Microsoft.NET Framework

Unhandled exception has occurred in your application.  If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.  If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

Could not load file or assembly 'Interop.DAO, Version=5.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKey=null' or one of its dependencies.  The system cannot find the file specified.

----------------

If I continue anyway, I get the same message on the next screen, and on the 3rd screen the drop-down menus won't work.

And, yes, the program in the Birder's Diary folder, along with the BD executable.  And I downloaded the program initially after shutting down every windows program I could, including the anti-virus.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Chuck,

My suspicion is that this has something to do with the latest version being built for Vista 64-bit and perhaps omitting the 32-bit version of the DAO file. But Gerco will have to say for sure.

Hi Chuck,

First a  few questions to help me troubleshoot your install?

Are you running XP- Home as your OS?

What version of the toolkit are your running? You can find this out by opening your file brower >> navigate to the Birder's Diary installation folder >> right mouse button click on teh BD2EB.EXE file >> click on the details tab. Please check File Version and Date.

If you are running a 64-bit OS, yes there are issues with the connection to the database. It is lcear that the current connection type is not the best way to handle the connection. That particular connection is not well supported by all accounts on 64-bit OS.

Hi Gerco,

Yes, XP-Home is the OS (32 bit).  The Tookit version is 1.0.1.6.  What do I need to do?

Thanks,

Chuck

Hi Chuck;

The error you received indicates that the "Interop.DAO.dll" is not present in the installation folder. I can reliably recreate the error you got when I rename or remove the Interop.DAO.dll. In order to fix this issue let's check the following:

1 - Check the Birder's Diary installation folder. On XP the default is C:\program files\birder's dairy. Is this your installation folder?
2 - Check if bd2ed.exe is located in the same folder as the birder's diary installation folder.
3 - Check if the Interop.DAO.dll is present in the same folder as bd2eb.exe.
4 - Check if eBirdCC.csv and eBirdHS.csv are present in the same folder as bd2eb.exe.

If any of these files are missing or in the incorrect location (e.g., files may have been placed in "c:\birder's diary" you can either copy the files and past the in the bd2eb.exe folder or reinstall the toolkit.

Please let us know if this works.

Gerco

Hi Gerco,

I think we've located the problem. There is no Interop.DAO.dll file anywhere on my computer, let alone in the BD directory (C:\Birder's Diary). Where can I get that file? I tried re-installing BD2ED, but the file is still missing.

Thanks,

Chuck

I'll work with Jeff to get this DLL to you one way or the other.Although there are plenty of website from which you could download this DLL, I am hesitant to provide these, since I am not familiar any of the sites.

Hi Jeff and Gerco,

Many thanks for the file.  I tested the program to see if it would work and it did well until it asked me name an observation to upload to eBird.  There were no location names on the drop down list (i.e., no drop down list) and it wouldn't allow me to write in the location name.  Also, where do I put the date?  The program only allows me to enter my first name as observer.  Will this do?

Thanks for your help so far.  We're almost there!

Chuck

Hi Chuck;

The top most drop down list on the Birder's Diary to eBird window will only show the first name of the observer. So if only you and the sample observer are in the database, the drop down list will only show "Chuck" and "Sample". The 3rd drop down list (the observations) will be populated once you have selected an observer in the first drop down list.

You do not need to enter a date. The third drop down list (observations) will contain a combination or location and date.

Please post a screen shot of any issues you run into. This will help me better understand what is going on.

Hi Gerco,

All the drop-downs work except for the observation list. More correctly, the observation list seems to function strangely. When I use my wife's name, the drop down list had only one "observation" - in Waterloo, OH in 3007 (an entry mistake). Otherwise there were no other options. My drop-down list remains empty. I've attempted to give you a screen shot, but I can't get it to paste into this reply box even when I can paste it into Word, and when I tried to paste from Word, I hit paste and nothing happens.

As you may have surmised, I'm not the most computer-savvy person on the planet.

Thanks,

Chuck

Hello Chuck,

There are two ways to reply to this topic: 1) using the Quick Reply box at the bottom of the thread display, or 2) Click on the Reply link associated with any post.

Only the second option above gives you the ability to attach screen shots, using the Message Attachments section below the editor. Also, in order to attach a screen shot, it must be saved to file first - not just in your paste buffer. See the page on this site Support => Forum Instructions. It has an FAQ on how to attach screen shots at the top of the page. It gives all the details.

Gerco will get back to you on the specific eBird issue.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi Chuck and Jeff,

Having direct access to Chuck's computer and check everything would be the easiest thing to do since I will need to check the tables in the database and his system configuration. This however is not feasible. So the next step would be for Chuck to upload his database so I can check it and fix it. After I have checked everything I post the new database back on the site for Chuck to download and work with.

To upload the database go the the following page: http://www.birdersdiary.com/SupportInfo/FileUpload/tabid/70/Default.aspx
