What hs happened? I have a copy of my paid invoice from April 2006. |

Hello:
Sounds like you installed some software recently that overwrote some things on your system. First try rebooting. If that doesn't fix the error, then re-run the v3.5 installation from the bottom of the downloads page on this site. It will not overwrite your data in any way and should fix this. It only takes a couple minutes.
Let me know either way please,
Jeff |

Hi Jim,
I downloaded and ran the "Birder's Diary V3.5.56 Single Setup" donlload and it did not fix the problem I get the same error message.
Did you run the setup file - such that you re-ran the installation completely? Or did you just download the file?
Installed new CA security software.
Not familiar with this - but if the above does not work, then I would assume that you need to tweak or remove this new software.
Let me know,
Jeff |

Jeff, still no luck. I just ran setup again. went through the install wizard etc. I still get the message: Application is not licensed on this computer You are running a demo version You have 24 days left in your demo
My newly installed CA security software is a very common anti virus, malware, etc security suite like Symantek's Norton security suite. It doesn't seem right that I uninstall my security system to run Birder's Diary. Is there another fix? What if I reinstalled it from the Cd-ROM/ Jim |

Jim,
Couple of ideas (until Jeff returns): My thought is that the install process may have been successful, but upon reinstalling, you may need to reactivate your program. If installing CA "broke" something, it could be it also broke the activation. (That's a different problem from having overwritten a program file).
1. If you're running Vista rather than XP, remember that you'll have to activate Brder's Diary while running it as an administrator, rather than as a standard user. There's a link to the procedure for this at the top of the forums here.
2. You shouldn't have to uninstall CA Security, but almost every security software package has a mode where you can temporarily disable it in order to install a new program. If CA is interfering, you should be able to temporarily turn it off long enough to get BD installed and activating, then turn it back on.
I'd suggest trying those options (first try to activate, using the Vista option if necessary; then if that doesn't work, turn off CA, try to activate, and then turn CA back on).

Sorry Kevin I tried it, but it did not work. Here's what I did:
I disabled, program protection, firewall, anti-spyware, anti-virus and anti-spam then I reran "setup." I then opened Birder's Diary and got the very same error message as above, but itnow says aI have 23 days left in my demo.
I'm running Windows XP.

Jim,
Maybe I'm overlooking something here - but while I see where you re-ran the setup, I don't see where you said you tried to re-activate the program. Activation is a separate step from installation.
Installation only re-installs the program onto your system, replacing any corrupted program files and so forth. Activation is a process that contacts the Birder's Diary system and checks the registration information you entered against BD's records for what you've paid for - and turns off the 30-day demo countdown. In turning off that countdown, it stores some information in your computer registry. If that information got messed up, you'd have to re-activate the software after re-installing it--and otherwise, it would think the re-installed copy was a demo copy.
The reason I think this may be the issue is that you're getting the "Demo mode" message instead of the original "Error with license control" message - and THAT original message suggests that the licensing information got messed up, which (might) cause it to re-set to demo mode.
Activation is accessed by clicking "Help -> License Information" and clicking on either "Unlock now" (if you have your unlocking codes) or "Unlock by email", where the system will give you two codes to send via email to Jeff and he'll send back the unlocking information. If you haven't done this step yet, that will probably complete solving the problem. |

Kevin - thanks for all your help. I was gone for 3 days.
Hi Jim,
Yes - you appear to no longer be getting the error that you posted in your first post above. So, we have made progress. Now, as Kevin suggested, the solution is to get your license activated again.
I see that you have the 3.0 to 3.5 upgrade license. And to get that special one activated, we need to follow the procedure below:
- Start v3.5
- You will get the Demo window
- Click on the Unlock by Phone (or is it "Unlock by Email" in that version) button.
- Reply here with the two user codes you find on that window. Keep BD open and running until I reply.
- I will respond with the two reg key codes that you will enter to activate your license.
I will wait to hear back.
Thanks,
Jeff |

Hi Jim,
Please post the two user codes here. I am not sure where you sent them but I did not get them.
Thanks,
