Jim,

I am moving your new post to this previous thread as it is the same problem and I want to keep this all together.

Jeff, I'm getting the same problem  When I start BD 3.5 I get the message that I'm running a demo version w 30 days left.  It then says:

Error with License Control.  ErrNum=9 Description=

Should I go through the same instructions yoi gave me before?  Jim

To answer your question, no. It seems we are in an endless cycle now. The real question is, what happened between the time you were not getting this error (after we fixed it) and now, when you started getting this error again. Something on your system (e.g. new CA software) is corrupting and/or preventing pieces of BD from operating correctly.

Let's start here. Let me know if you can pinpoint anything you did between the time it worked and stopped working.

Jeff

Jim,

I can give a good guess as to what is going on. In order for BD licensing to work correctly, it has to write items to the registry that stay put. Any software (many kinds exist that cause this problem, system cleaners, anti-virus, cookie/history cleanup, etc) that mucks with the registry, for example, cleans up cookies, history, settings, etc have and will cause this problem. These are poorly behaving pieces of software. For example, Norton Antivirus nor MacAfee cause this problem, but many, many other pieces of acclaimed anti-virus software DO incorrectly process the registry and therefore cause these problems. Remember, this problem started after you installed your new CA security software.

So - we can get you going again by doing the process above that we did previously, but I think you need to disable the CA software before that and leave it disabled for a few days to see if the problem goes away. Then re-enable it and I will be the problem comes back. If there is someway to disable registry actions on this software, then I recommend that.

Jeff

Okay Jeff, I'm ready to do this. To get my BD "legal" again, my user code 1 is 230926801 and my user code 2 is 8382919. Can you give me the other codes I need. Jim

Jeff, Same problem. I opened BD this morning to add my weekend data and got the sa same license control error. I disabled CA security software and it didn't seem to affect it one way or another. I changed to settings on CA to notify me before deleting any spyware or viruses. Any new advice? Sorry to keep pestering you about this. Jim

Hi Jim,

Did you really have CA completely disabled since the successful activation on 8/23 up until now? I have little doubt that this is the problem. If you disabled it for a while, say a week or so, and then re-enabled it and now we have the license problem again, well... this problem will not go away.

Please go ahead and send me your user codes and we can get you going the same as before.

Jeff

Jeff, I can seem to fix the problem no matter what.  Can I "backup" my data, install the program on my laptop, then do a database "restore" and have the same thing I had before?  Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim,

There is no reason you cannot move BD to any computer you own and use. So the answer is yes.

Because of the special "Upgrade from 3.0 to 3.5" license you have, you will have to send me your two user codes from the new installation so that we can activate the license.

Also, as my way of saying I am sorry we couldn't resolve this issue on your new computer, I have put a free license for the ABA 2008 taxonomy list in your account. Please contact me via email for the installation password and activation password when you are ready.

fyi

Jeff, same problem again! Is it because after you give me the numbers I enter them in on the "unlock by email" area instead of the "Unlock Now" area?

My User Code 1 is: 257141988
My User Code 2 is: 8864579

Hi Jim,

Is it because after you give me the numbers I enter them in on the "unlock by email" area instead of the "Unlock Now" area?

No - it is as stated above:

To answer your question, no. It seems we are in an endless cycle now. The real question is, what happened between the time you were not getting this error (after we fixed it) and now, when you started getting this error again. Something on your system (e.g. new CA software) is corrupting and/or preventing pieces of BD from operating correctly.

If you reinstall Windows, then BD again, I guarantee this problem will go away. Then, if you install CA software again, I bet it will reappear.

Here are your new reg key codes to enter under "unlock by email".

Jeff, the problem may be unsolvable. I uninstalled CA security software, then entered the reg key codes and started using the software. The next time I went into Birders Diary, I got the same license control error message. What can I do. I'm an original Birders Diary user, even was around at the Cincinnati Nature Center when one of the staff was testing Pete's beta version. I've got years of data I can't access right now. Jim

Hi Jim,

Very sorry for this Jim. Let's readdress this.

Have I tried getting onto your system yet and seeing what I can do? I reviewed this thread and maybe I missed it but I don't see where I tried this yet.

You are still on XP and have no other computer to use BD on - correct?

Uninstalling CA will not fix the current problem. It has already corrupted files and registry. So, uninstalling it just keeps it from doing it again.

How painful will it be for you to reformat your hard disk and reinstall Windows? I guarantee it will work after that.

But, if I get onto your system and run some monitor tools, I may be able to find the file/registry that got corrupted and replace it. I have been successful with this exact same problem and this solution once. But it took hours.

Please answer all the questions above and let's chart a path.

Jeff

I just re-read your post. And now you are stating that you are back to the original License control error problem.

Remember, this was the original problem. Then, once you reinstalled v3.5, that went away, but you were perpetually in Demo mode. Now we are back to the original problem?

I need to get onto your system. But please answer all questions in the post above this first.

Jeff
