Jeff,

Every month I use the BD2ebird tool to prepare my sightings for uploading to ebird. Twice now the program has stopped showing the most recent entries in the "Select Observations" drop down list. The last time this happened it was corrected by downloading the latest version of the toolkit. This time I have again downloaded the toolkit but this didn't correct it.

I have included a screenshot showing the top item on the drop down menu dated July 5, 2009. In Birder's Diary I have another 15 day/locations (from July 6 through July 19) that are not showing up. How can I find them?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

I am sorry to hear that the eBird toolkit is not doing what it is supposed to do. I will revisit the code and see why the toolkit does not recognize your latest observations. It is a bit puzzling that one day it works and the next month it does not.

Just to make sure, are you entering time with you observations or just the date? Also, do you use keyboard entry or checklist?

Gerco,
I almost always use the checklist entry and did so on these latest sightings also. I did not use a time, just the date.

Thanks,
Dave

Gerco,
Just an update - this morning it is working again. I had tried it several times since my last post with no success till this morning. Can't tell you why.

Hi Dave,

By "...it is working again...", can I assume you mean that it is now showing the most recent listings in the Select Observations dropdown?

Gerco will be the one to investigate, but I just want to make sure we know what you mean.

Thanks,

Jeff

Great that your latest trips are listed again but it is weird that the tool behaves like this. Did you do anything different in term sof entering your observations?

As Jeff states, I am investigating this and updating the current code to ensure a more robust approach in determining if new trips have been added.

I have a slightly different issue...I found that the export tool did not like the names of some of my BD Locations. An example is where I have a BD location with a slash in the name, such as "Park East / Park West" because the physical location is composed of two sections of a single park and I did not care to record sightings for each separate section. The BD2Ebird tool could not create an output file containing a slash in the name.
So, I edited location name in BD and removed the slashes, exited the BD2Ebird tool & restarted it, however the updated location name does not appear in the "Select Observations" drop-down box.

I presume that I would have to un-install the BD2Ebird tool & re-install it in order to refresh the Observations list ?

For me it is not a big issue, as I had just two locations like this...but others could run into this obstacle.

I did another test where I added sightings for a new date (today). Closed BD.

Then I checked the BD2Ebird tool and the new sighting date showed in the Observations list.

I then closed the tool, started BD and deleted the sightings for the new date. Closed BD.

Then started the BD2Ebird tool, and the deleted sighting still appeared in the Observations list.

So while the tool successfully detects new sightings, it does not seem to detect changes and/or deletions.

Regards,

Jim

A final thought, understanding that the entire observations list cannot be auto-refreshed every time the toll is started, possibly the tool can be enhanced to have a button that lets the user explicitly select the refresh.

** I was incorrect about the renaming of BD locations....the new names did appear in the BD2Ebird Observations drop-down box just after the old location name. **

Hi Jim,

Thanks very much for this info. I am sure Gerco will be updating the toolkit with these enhancements in mind. Thanks for providing the level of detail that you did.

Gosh, I go on a one-day business trip and people start talking about the Toolkit. I too run into the problem, that I update location names, delete them, etc. The good news is that a tool that allows you to manage (update/delete) your locations will be available in the next version of the toolkit.  An initial version I am already testing.
