I tried to add Dusky Grouse to my personal ABA list. When i put the scientific name in it said it was a blue grouse. so i removed blue grouse and added dusky grouse and sooty grouse to my personal ABA list. Now the tax list all show sooty and dusky grouse. The 2007 ABA list show Blue grouse with a red box. My personal ABA list shows them just right. The problem is that Blue, dusky and sooty grouse have disappeared from the add tax list and all life list . Blue grouse is still in the sightings records. What have i done.

Hello John,

The answer is non-trivial.

But in a brief nutshsell, if you added Sooty/Dusky Grouses to your aba list using the same internal thing as that referenced by the same birds in your 2007 list, then all would be right. You can determine this by using the Rosetta Stone feature in BD.

Let's start here and have you ask questions if this does not give you what you need.

Jeff,
When I look at the Rosetta Stone it shows in John's ABA List Sooty Grouse -Dendragapus fuliginosus and Dusky Grouse - Dendragapus obscurus. IT shows in Birds-ABA-2006 and Birds-ABA-2007 List Sooty Grouse- Dendragapus fuliginosus- Thing Description- Blue Grouse fuliginosus. And Dusky Grouse- Dendragapus obscurus- Thing Description- Blue Grouse obscurus.
So to me everything in the Tax list looks OK. Howerver the problem is to get these correct Tax listings to show up in life list and on the add list.

Hi John,

You didn't mention the all-important question: what thing is the Sooty and Dusky Grouse in your John's ABA list point to? You mentioned that both point to the correct things in the ABA 2006 and 2007 tax lists. You see, it is these things that are tied to locations.

Let me know.

Jeff,
Rosetta shows that Sooty Grouse Thing Description is Sooty Grouse and Dusky Grouse is Dusky Grouse in John's ABA List.

When I put Blue Grouse in Rosetta the Thing Description is Blue Grouse but the Scientific name is only the genus - Dendragapus in Birds ABA North America 2006 and 2007 . All other Tax List except John's ABA list the full scientific name -Dendragapus obscurus

Great John,

Now we are getting somewhere. You obviously created the things Sooty Grouse and Dusky Grouse before adding them to your private ABA tax list. These things are not associated with any locations nor are they connected to the other tax lists.

To fix this you have to do the following:

  1. Correct your existing sightings for these things
    1. In View/Edit Sightings, specify "Sooty Grouse" in the NAME field and choose your private tax list.
    2. When you click Continue you will be presented with a window that asks which thing you mean to edit, choose the "Sooty Grouse" thing you had created for your private tax list.
    3. On the View/Edit grid window, select all sightings and click on the Edit button.
    4. On the Edit Sightings window, check the checkbox to the left of the name field and type Sooty Grouse in the Name field.
    5. Click Update and you will be presented with the same window again that asks which thing you mean to edit. This time choose the "Blue Grouse fuliginosus" thing.
    6. Repeat a-e for Dusky Grouse.
  2. Fix your private tax list
    1. Using the Tax Editor, remove dusky grouse and sooty grouse from your private tax list.
    2. Now, re-add both but specify the things Blue Grouse fuliginosus and Blue Grouse obscurus for Sooty Grouse and Dusky Grouse respectively. Instead of the things you created.

Let me know if you have questions on this.

Jeff
