I hope you had a good break Jeff.  I am really frustrated - having got BDV36 working perfectly on my laptop which is running Vista I decided to ensure my desktop computer had all the latest checklists and add my latest version of the sightings database (still running XP on this one).  After finding out that speech recognition had stopped working and then having trouble importing the new Clements world list I decided to uninstall and reinstall everything from scratch. However it appears that BD must have log files outside of the BD directory because after installing BDV36 again it opened and was functional without me needing to reactivate and also showing a photo of birds in the background which had been there in the previous install (it knew where to look to display this background photo). Everything was working though so I decided to proceed with the install of the taxonomy and checklist and this is where it got frustrating - taxonomy imports perfectly and as per video however the checklist import runs all the way through (21 mins) and then stops on what I am assuming is the last bird - Zitting Cisticola and the programme becomes non-responsive.  I have reinstalled BDV36 five time and tried the taxonomy and checklist import at least seven but the end result is the same.  What am I doing wrong.  Do I need to reinstall previous versions first and work my way up ?

Please help !

Nicolette,

I'm guessing that the checklist import is working as it should, but it takes a long time at the end to analyze the import.  Do you have the "analyze data before import" box checked?  If so, then it will just take a long time to do that.  For the master world checklist file that you're importing, it's probably safe to uncheck that box (unless you've made personal checklist modifications to country or state lists).  I think that should significantly reduce the time needed for the import.  Either way, I'm betting that it's working as it should...just gotta let it do its thing, even if it says the program is not responding.

Hello Nicolette,

Sorry for my delayed response. Back from vacation, but sicker than a ... very sick bird.

Nick, of course, is correct. Just let the import continue to run until you get the completed message. This can take 1-2 hours where BD appears to be hung. Let it run. You will get a message indicate how many were added and how many were removed. This World bird checklist with all subspecies is a LOT of data and takes a long time to import.

And, just to be sure I understand you text correctly, your database contains everything. All your sightings and all of your tax lists. So, if you import the new Clements into one database, and then copy the database over to another system, then it will be there also - you will just need to activate the tax list if it hasn't been activated on the new system yet.

Also, yes, each system remembers your settings even if you uninstall and re-install BD.

Let me know if I can assist further.

Jeff

Hi Nick and Jeff

I am not sure if this helps the situation. I havent even got to the stage where I bring in my own database. I will try importing the checklist and leaving it but I have not had it last longer than half an hour before. I did not realise that if I installed my backup database that it would have the checklist as part of that so I will try to install the backup and see if that solves the problem. Will let you know.
