Hi,

SmartSearch is rejecting "Rose-breasted Grosbeak" (common, scientific or bandcode).

I am also now unable to disable SmartSearch by pressing CTRL-down arrow (screenshot).

An error message is also generated when I try to edit the species in the Taxonomy Editor (screenshot).

I am only allowed to enter RBGR sightings in the checklist. This error seems to affect all tax lists on this machine. The copy of BD on my laptop is not affected. (Both are running 3.6.49)

Several months ago, I created my own taxonomy & checklist (to include generics such as sparrow sp.) but there were not any edits in family Cardinalidae, so I am puzzled.

Do I need to reinstall BD to fix this? Will I lose my user created checklists & taxonomies?

Thanks,

Felicia

Hello Felicia,

Lots of questions.

Thanks for the screenshots!

As for the message on the Keyboard Entry window, this indicates that for the selections you made in the Sightings Entry Setup window, Rose-breasted Grosbeak  did not meet the criteria. That smartsearch field will only allow you to select names which meet the criteria you selected in the setup window. So a screenshot of that window will help us decide why RBGR did not meet the criteria.

As for the message on the Taxonomy Editor window, I cannot be sure which field you were typing in, so I would need that information to help you figure out why you are getting that. For example, if you are trying to add RBGR to a tax list and also trying to type it into the Preset field, that would explain it. The Preset field only allows entry for things that already exist in the tax list you are editing. It is a means of presetting the classification fields based on something else already in the tax list.

This should not have anything to do with your private tax list. Although, you could have simply editing an existing tax list and added the generics to it.

Your BD database contains all of your data and your tax lists (both those you purchase from us and those you created). So having a backup of your database preserves everything. But, reinstalling BD is not the fix or the problem.

Perhaps you just need to have the Name performance table rebuilt. And you can do this by editing any thing or tax list entry, exiting and restarting BD.

Let me know please,

Jeff

Jeff,

I have Maryland checked as the sightings location filter on both machines (screen). The laptop will allow me to enter Rose-breasted Grosbeak or RBGR, but this system does not accept the entry.

If I change the location filter to Pennsylvania or ABA Area, RBGR is accepted on this system. I suppose this could be a work-around for the rare times that I need to add the species.

I opened up the Taxonomy Editor only to make certain that Rose-breasted Grosbeak was there. The Tax Edit error message that I sent seems to be irrelevant (the laptop gives me the same error). I did try to add the band code as an alternate name, but this did not help.

I will try to edit something in the tax list to rebuild the Name performance table.

Thanks,

Felicia

Hello Felicia,

Thanks again for the screenshots. So helpful.

Sounds as if perhaps the RBGR has been removed from its association with location Maryland. You can check this easily by bringing up the Checklist Editor, see screen shot below. Be sure to click the Load button after entering the name into the name field.

Assuming Maryland is missing from the list, simply add it by

  1. Typing "Maryland" into the location field.
  2. Clicking on the "+" (Add) button.
  3. Click on the Update button.

Let me know please,

Jeff

Jeff,

That was the problem: Maryland was missing as a location for RBGR. Now fixed with checklist editor.

Thanks so much!

Felicia
