Hello Richard,
When you say "load BD", are you referring to the act of installation or actually running BD? In either case, your Windows system has an association with some file extension (e.g. PDF == activate Adobe Acrobat Reader) that is being triggered by the event. Usually, if you have this happening, it is happening with other pieces of software as well. The key to determining what exactly is causing this is nailing down the event that is occuring in BD when this happens. Is it during application startup? Also, in most cases, if you cancel out of the request to insert your Dell CD - it will continue without issue.
As for locations, that is exactly how BD works. Locations are hierarchical. Think of it as an "a is contained by b" relationship. You can create an unlimited number of personal locations and link them in the parent-child (contained-by) relationship. If this isn't making sense, please give me more detail.
No problem with taxonomic lists. Simply choose those that you want/need. E.g. BOU, Butterflies of UK, Clements World Birds, etc etc. Let me know if you require more info here please.
