I've run into a couple of problems with trying to get my trial version up and running.

Firstly, whenever I load BD, there are a number of pop-up screens asking me to insert my Dell Resource CD. I have not done so, and am reluctant to do so until I can find out why its required. Can you help please?

And secondly, I am finding it difficult to sort out locations. A country on its own is of limited use to me in the way I keep my records. I might for instance want a sighting recorded in my garden, also in my town, also in my county, also in my country and in my wider country (eg England and United Kingdom) and also Europe.

And I can see foresee a problem with Taxonomic lists - why would I need more than one?

Hello Richard,

When you say "load BD", are you referring to the act of installation or actually running BD? In either case, your Windows system has an association with some file extension (e.g. PDF == activate Adobe Acrobat Reader) that is being triggered by the event. Usually, if you have this happening, it is happening with other pieces of software as well. The key to determining what exactly is causing this is nailing down the event that is occuring in BD when this happens. Is it during application startup? Also, in most cases, if you cancel out of the request to insert your Dell CD - it will continue without issue.

As for locations, that is exactly how BD works. Locations are hierarchical. Think of it as an "a is contained by b" relationship. You can create an unlimited number of personal locations and link them in the parent-child (contained-by) relationship. If this isn't making sense, please give me more detail.

No problem with taxonomic lists. Simply choose those that you want/need. E.g. BOU, Butterflies of UK, Clements World Birds, etc etc. Let me know if you require more info here please.

Thank you for replying so quickly!

Both installation and running produced/produces these screens. I just shut down BD and restarted it. I had to cancel seven screens before BD would open. I then selected "Location" and had to cancel six screens before I could reach the child screen. On the few brief occasions I have ventured further, I have been assailed by the "Insert Dell" screens. I can get past them but they slow things down a lot.

The two main items that come up are:-

"The feature you are trying to use is on a cd-rom or other removeable disk that is not available. Insert Dell Resource CD disk and click OK"

"Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Dell Resource CD. The Windows installer cannot continue"

Hi Richard,

Your Windows installation is a bit messed up. If you re-installed Windows, you would not have this problem. But, who wants to do that. Do you have your Dell Resource CD? If so, why not try to put it in and see what Windows thinks needs to be installed.

What version of Windows are you running? (e.g. XP, Vista, 7)

What type of computer hardware (32 or 64-bit?)?

Let me know please,

Jeff

Hi

I put the CD in - it didn't tell me what it loaded, but it has fixed the problem.

Thanks for the update Richard. Nice when something works the way it is supposed to every now and then!

Let me know if you have any more question or if there is anything else I can assist with.

Jeff
